Climate action cannot wait for Covid pandemic to end, 220 journals warn

The world leaders need to take immediate action to limit climate change, restore biodiversity, and protect health, according to an editorial published in over 220 leading journals, including The Lancet and the National Medical Journal of India, PTI reported.

The editorial is being published ahead of the UN General Assembly, one of the last international meetings taking place before the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, UK in November.

It warns that the greatest threat to global public health into the future is the continued failure of world leaders to take adequate action to keep the global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius and to restore nature.

72% say Covid vaccine safe & effective against coronavirus: Poll

A total of 72 per cent respondents of a survey think that Indian Covid vaccines are safe & effective against the coronavirus. However, 60 per cent of the respondents believe that Indian vaccines are at par with foreign Covid-19 vaccines, IANS reported.

The survey 'Public Ki Awaaz Poll' was conducted by location-based social networking app "Public" to examine the extent of vaccine hesitancy. The poll garnered a total of 9,14,164 responses to find out the vaccine hesitancy. According to the survey, 8.8 per cent of the respondents expressed hesitation in getting vaccinated against the virus.

According to the aggregate estimates, a large chunk of respondents considers it safe to take the vaccine. Around 72 per cent strongly agree that the vaccines are safe & effective and over a majority of 60 per cent respondents believe that Indian vaccines are at par with foreign Covid-19 vaccines. Around 25 per cent of the respondents said that they've already been vaccinated with both the doses.

Students of govt school contract Covid-19

Three students of a government higher secondary school in Coimbatore district tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday though they showed no symptoms, said sources in the Department of Health, according to PTI.

After sending the students to a hospital, the department disinfected the school premises to prevent further spread of the infection and declared a holiday for the institution, they said.

Rural India is empowering Covid vaccination drive: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday praised the people of Himachal for not allowing any rumour or disinformation to hamper the COVID vaccination drive in the state and said that country's rural society is empowering the vaccination drive, ANI reported.

Speaking at the interaction session with the healthcare workers and beneficiaries of the COVID-19 vaccination programme in Himachal Pradesh, PM Modi said, "The people of Himachal did not allow any rumour and any disinformation to hamper the vaccination efforts. Himachal is proof of how the country's rural society is empowering the world's largest and fastest vaccination campaign."

The Prime Minister als0 expressed happiness that even in a remote district like Lahaul-Spiti has been a leader in giving 100 per cent first dose.

Single-day Covid-19 infection rate among children rises to over 20% in Odisha

The daily coronavirus infection rate among children and adolescents reached the all-time high of 20 per cent in Odisha on Monday as 122 of 609 fresh patients are below 18 years of age, a health department official said, according to PTI.

The single-day positivity ratio among people below 18 years of age was at 16.27 per cent on Sunday and 17.32 per cent on Saturday, he said.

"The daily COVID infection rate among children and adolescents rose to 20.3 per cent, which is a matter of concern as they have not been inoculated," the official said.

Hetero's Tocilizumab biosimilar gets emergency use authorisation from DCGI for Covid treatment

Drug firm Hetero on Monday said it has received emergency use authorisation from Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for its biosimilar version of Tocilizumab for treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalised adults, PTI reported.

The company will market the drug under the brand name 'Tocira', Hetero said in a statement.

This authorisation will enable medical practitioners to use the drug for the treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalised adults who are receiving systemic corticosteroids and require supplemental oxygen, non-invasive or invasive mechanical ventilation, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, it added.

Pfizer Covid booster shot likely to start by Sep 20 in US: Fauci

The US' booster shot campaign against Covid-19 will likely start with only the Pfizer vaccine from September 20, the country's top infectious disease expert has said, according to IANS.

The rollout for Moderna's booster vaccine could, however, be delayed, CNBC news quoted Anthony Fauci as saying on Sunday.

Although both drugmakers have applied to US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for authorisation of a third dose either six months or eight months after getting the second dose, they haven't been officially approved by the agency.

4 million doses of Sinopharm vaccines arrive in Sri Lanka

Four million doses of the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccines from China have arrived in Sri Lanka, as the island nation is in the midst of a large scale inoculation program against the virus.
 
The country's Health Ministry said the vaccines arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport from China's capital Beijing on Sunday and were handed over to health authorities, reports Xinhua news agency.
 
Namal Rajapaksa, the Minister of Youth and Sports, said the vaccines will be used to administer the second doses in several districts and made available to inoculate people of the 20-30-year age groups in the Western Province as well as in the Galle district in southern Sri Lanka.

Ladakh reports 5 new COVID-19 cases, 7 recoveries

Ladakh registers five more COVID-19 cases, taking the union territory's infection tally to 20,583, while the count of active cases stands at 57, officials said on Monday.
 
Ladakh has registered 207 Covid-related deaths so far -- 149 in Leh and 58 in Kargil. No death due to the disease was reported on Sunday.
 
Seven more COVID-19 patients were cured and discharged from hospitals on Sunday, taking the tally of recoveries to 20,298, the officials said.

India administering 12.5 mn Covid-19 vaccines daily: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India is administering 12.5 million Covid vaccines daily which is higher than the population of several countries.
 
Modi said Himachal Pradesh has become a champion by being the first state to administer the first dose of Covid vaccine to all eligible people despite logistic difficulties.
 
Sikkim and Dadra and Nagar Haveli too have achieved this target, he said.
