UP reports 24 more Covid-19 deaths, 2,036 new cases

Uttar Pradesh reported 24 more Covid-19 fatalities on Sunday, taking the death toll to 7,718, while 2,036 new cases pushed the state's infection tally to 5,41,873.
 
Seven deaths were from state capital Lucknow and two from Gorakhpur, the Health department bulletin issued here said.
 
As far as new infections are concerned, Lucknow recorded 342 followed by 230 in Meerut, 123 in Gautam Buddh Nagar, 113 in Ghaziabad and 108 in Kanpur

Maharashtra's Covid-19 case count rises by 5,544, death toll by 85

The cumulative tally of coronavirus patients in Maharashtra went up to 18,20,059 on Sunday with the addition of 5,544 new positive cases, the health department said.
 
As the virus claimed 85 patients, the state's death toll reached 47,071, it said.

Kerala's Covid-19 caseload almost touches 600,000 mark, 5643 new additions

Kerala registered 5,643 fresh Covid-19 cases on Sunday, taking the total caseload to almost six lakh, while the toll mounted to 2,223with 27 related deaths, Health minister K K Shailaja said.
 
As many as 5,861 have been cured of the infection, and so far 5,32,658 have recovered while 64,589 people are undergoing treatment.

Covid-19 outbreak on perpetual decline in Delhi: Govt

The Delhi government on Sunday said that Covid-19 outbreak in the city was in "perpetual decline" mode with decreasing number of new cases as well as the death rate going down compared to figures from earlier this month.
 
Health and Family Welfare Minister Satyendar Jain made the declaration during a press conference to release the daily Delhi Health Bulletin as he gave updates about the pandemic, the decreasing positivity rate and various other issues.
 
Against 4,998 new cases in Delhi on Saturday, the number of fresh cases on Sunday was 4,906, he said.

Malaysia reported 1,309 new Covid-19 infections, bringing the national total to 64,485, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.
 
Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that one of the new cases is imported and 1,308 are local transmissions.

Indonesia sets new daily record of Covid-19 cases

Indonesia has set a new single-day record of the number of Covid-19 cases, the Indonesian Health Ministry said on Sunday.
 
A total of 6,267 cases were recorded in Indonesia over the given period, bringing the overall number of cases to 534,266.
 
The death toll from the disease has reached 16,815 since the outbreak of the pandemic, while 445,793 Covid-19 patients have recovered across the country.

Thirty-two more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Tripura on Sunday, pushing the state's tally to 32,674, a health department official said.
 
The death toll remained at 367 as no new fatality due to the contagion was reported.

Boris Johnson defends tier-based lockdown in letter to rebel colleagues

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged his Conservative Party lawmakers to back the government's tier-based COVID-19 lockdown in a Parliament vote in a letter stressing that there "a sunset" clause or expiry date of February 3 on the latest restrictions.
 
In an attempt to curb a growing rebellion within his own ranks against the new measures which face a House of Commons vote next Tuesday, Johnson wrote on Saturday evening that the tiers will be reviewed every two weeks, and areas can move down the tiers from mid-December.
 
"Regulations have a sunset of 3 February. After the fourth fortnightly review (27 January), Parliament will have another vote on the tiered approach, determining whether the measures stay in place until the end of March," he wrote.
