Pandemic dampens spirits in Agra on World Tourism Day
Amid the growing socio-economic uncertainties and health concerns due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a new tourist season has begun in Agra but without the fervour and hopes of a revival of the hospitality industry.
The customary celebrations on the World Tourism Day are missing, though after a long break, the Mughal monuments including the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort are now open to tourists.
Hoteliers in the city are hoping for a turnaround in late October, if air connectivity and train mobility normalise. "Right now the international traffic is negligent. Over a dozen five-star hotels in the city depend on the international clientele. The bookings continue to remain dismal," founder president of Agra Hotels and Restaurants Association Surendra Sharma said.

Signs of falling coronavirus numbers may be deceptive, warn experts
The seven-day rolling average of daily Covid-19 cases in India has declined from the peak of around 95,000 in mid-September to below 85,000 towards the end of the month, according to data maintained by COVID19India, an independent data repository.
This gives a sense that the epidemic is coming under “control” in India.
The same period shows another positive trend: The rate at which new infections spread has also declined below 1, implying that 100 infected people now infect less than 100 new uninfected ones. This is so if one goes by the parameter R — the dynamic reproductive rate — formulated by University of Chicago-led researchers. However, data across most affected states shows that this positive turn has happened when testing has been slowing down in the country. Read on...

Virtual AGMs see lower shareholder representation amid Covid-19 pandemic
More shareholders attended their companies’ annual general meetings (AGMs) during the pandemic as video conferencing became the norm. However, the paradox is that these higher numbers translate into lower representation.
Business Standard checked the attendance numbers for the 30 companies comprising the Sensex. Data was available for 24 of them, some were yet to hold their meetings or make data available. The companies saw a median increase of 54 attendees. The number of attendees as a percentage of the total shareholding, however, fell from 0.08 per cent of the shareholding base last year to 0.06 per cent now. Read on...

Coronavirus impact: 6 months on, migrants caught between hope and despair
Government data shows that about one-third of the migrant workers who went back to their villages, belong to Uttar Pradesh. The Prayagraj district saw the highest reverse migration in the state — 104,009, after Siddharth Nagar (161,796).
Six months after the lockdown was imposed, Business Standard interviewed over two dozen migrant workers across five villages of Prayagraj. As the economy opens up, most of them are either hunting for a job or desperately waiting for a phone call from their previous employers.
But the bruises of the lockdown are still fresh in their minds. Read on...
