Worst-ever recession in South Asia; tipping millions into poverty: Report

Millions of people in South Asia are being pushed into extreme poverty as the region where a quarter of humanity lives suffers its worst-ever recession due to the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the World Bank said on Thursday.
 
The multi-lateral lender forecast a record economic contraction of 7.7% for South Asia this year, and said workers in the informal sector were being hit hardest, and private consumption was unlikely to recover quickly from the blow. Read on...

Amid scarcity, Yogi Adityanath unveils UP's largest oxygen plant

Amid a shortage of oxygen to treat Covid-19 patients at hospitals in India, Uttar Pradesh chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday virtually inaugurated the state’s largest oxygen plant in Modinagar, Ghaziabad.
 
The plant, commissioned by INOX Air Products (INOX), one of India’s largest manufacturers of industrial and medical gases, has a capacity of 150 tonnes liquid medical oxygen per day. It has been set up as part of an agreement signed between the Uttar Pradesh government and INOX AP during the ‘UP Investors’ Summit 2018’ on February 21 and 22, 2018. Two in five Indian professionals are in distress amid Covid crisis: LinkedIn

Nearly 39 Indian professionals or two in five are experiencing increased stress or anxiety due to COVID-19, online professional network LinkedIn said on Thursday. As the pandemic took hold, only one in five professionals are being offered more time off for well-being, it said while analysing key survey data from April to September to highlight how pandemic stress and remote work burnout have adversely impacted the mental health of professionals in India. The report containing online survey responses of 16,199 professionals comes ahead of the World Mental Health Day on October 10. "The economic repercussions of ongoing pandemic have made Indian professionals vulnerable to job uncertainty, financial instability and bleak company outlook w hile continuing to work remotely in social isolation," it said.

Wearing masks significantly reduces Covid-19 spread: Study

New research adds to the growing body of evidence that wearing a mask can play a significant role in reducing the spread of Covid-19. The study from Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Canada, have found that mask mandates are associated with a 25 per cent or larger weekly reduction in Covid-19 cases. The research also found that relaxed restrictions on businesses and gatherings (including retail, restaurants and bars) were positively associated with subsequent Covid-19 case growth - a factor that could offset and obscure the health benefits of mask mandates.

Odisha govt initiates process for reopening of major temples

The Odisha government on Thursday asked major temple administrations of the state under endowment to prepare a plan of action for reopening of the sites to worshippers while adhering to Covid-19 regulations. It directed the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), Puri and other major temples to chalk out an action plan for devotees to visit shrines with strict adherence to Covid-19 guidelines. The government also asked the district collectors to consult with all stakeholders and submit a report in this regard in the next 10 days. "State govt directs temple administration of Puri and other major temples of state under endowment to prepare plan of action for opening temples for worshippers adhering to covid regulations. Respective Collectors will submit report after consultation with all stake holders in next 10 days," tweeted Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy.

China to pay a 'big price' for spreading Covid-19 globally: Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump has warned that China will have to "pay a big price" for the spread of coronavirus globally. Less than 50 hours after he returned to the White House from a military hospital where he was treated for the deadly virus, Trump in a video posted on Twitter from the Rose Garden outside the Oval Office blamed China for the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The deadly coronavirus originated from the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year and spread across the world, killing 1,054,674 and infecting 36,077,017. The US is the worst-hit nation with 211,793 deaths and 7,549,429 infections. "It wasn't your fault that this happened. It was China's fault. And China's going to pay a big price for what they've done to this country. China is going to pay a big price for what they've done to the world. This was China's fault. Just remember that."

Telangana coronavirus update: 1,896 new Covid-19 cases; 12 deaths

Telangana reported 1,896 new COVID-19 cases, taking the tally of infections to 2,06,644, while the death toll rose to 1,201 with 12 more fatalities, a state government bulletin said on Thursday. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) registered 294 out of the 1,896 fresh cases, followed by Rangareddy (211), Medchal Malkajgiri (154), Nalgonda (126), Siddipet (100) and other districts, it said, providing data as of 8 pm on October 7. The bulletin said 50,367 samples were tested on October 7. Cumulatively, the number of samples tested was 33,96,839. The samples tested per million population was 91,264, it added.

Tripura coronavirus update: 214 new Covid-19 cases, 3 fresh fatalities

Tripura's COVID-19 tally rose to 27,759 on Thursday as 214 more people tested positive for the infection, a health official said. Three more patients succumbed to the infection, pushing the northeastern state's coronavirus death toll to 301, he said.
