Pfizer vaccine safe for children aged 5-11, show clinical trials

Pfizer said Monday its COVID-19 vaccine works for children ages 5 to 11 and that it will seek US authorisation for this age group soon -- a key step toward beginning vaccinations for youngsters.
 
The vaccine made by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech already is available for anyone 12 and older.
 
But with kids now back in school and the extra-contagious delta variant causing a huge jump in pediatric infections, many parents are anxiously awaiting vaccinations for their younger children.
 
For elementary school-aged kids, Pfizer tested a much lower dose -- a third of the amount that's in each shot given now.

Covid jab to pregnant women, SC issues notice on DCPCR plea

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre on a plea by the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) raising the issue of Covid vaccination for pregnant and lactating women, PTI reported.
 
Advocate Vrinda Grover, representing DCPCR, submitted before a bench comprising justices D.Y. Chandrachud and B.V. Nagarathna that after the petition was filed in May this year, the Centre had issued operational guidelines on vaccination for pregnant and lactating women. She added, however, now they say that there may be some adverse effect on them due to vaccination.

Odisha registers 510 new Covid-19 cases, 6 more fatalities

Odisha Monday registered a slight decline in the daily COVID-19 cases with 510 people testing positive for the infection which pushed the state's caseload to 10,20,754, a health department official said, PTI reported.
 
The state on Sunday had reported 623 cases while on Saturday it was 695.
 
Of the 510 new cases, 79 were children and adolescents in the age group of 0 to 18 years. The rate of infection among the children and adolescents was 15.49 per cent against 15.24 per cent on Sunday.

Raj: LS speaker interacts with Kota students who lost parents to Covid

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla held an interaction with students who are preparing for various competitive examinations here and have lost their parents or earning member of the family to COVID-19, PTI reported.
 
Birla, the MP from Kota a major coaching hub for competitive examination preparations in the country had in May announced free coaching and accommodation in the city for such students and had also held a meeting with the directors of coaching institutes.
 
During the interaction held at Birla's camp office on Sunday, the Lok Sabha speaker called upon the students to work hard and turn the dreams of their parents into reality.

Pakistan reports over 2,167 fresh cases of Covid-19 in last 24 hours

Pakistan reported 2,167 fresh cases of COVID-19 after 51,348 tests were conducted across the country in the last 24 hours, according to Pakistan's National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) data.
 
As many as 40 deaths were reported due to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, said NCOC data.
 
The positivity rate fell to 4.22 per cent, as compared to the previous day's 4.68 per cent. According to NCOC data, at least 4,840 patients were in critical care.

Puducherry adds 54 fresh coronavirus cases

Puducherry logged 54 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours as the overall tally climbed to 1,25,517, a senior Health department official said on Monday, according to PTI.
 
The number of active cases in the union territory stood at 867, the Director of Health and Family Welfare Services G Sriramulu said in a release.
 
The 54 new infections were identified at the end of the examination of 4,069 samples and were spread over Puducherry (34), Karaikal (15) and Mahe (five). Yanam did not report any new case.

India administers lowest number of coronavirus tests in a month

India conducted the lowest number of daily Covid-19 tests since mid-August on Sunday, but the health ministry urged local governments not to let their guard down during the September to November festival season.
 
States and federally controlled territories carried out 1.18 million tests on Sunday, government data showed on Monday, down from 1.56 million on Saturday and against a capacity of more than 2 million.
 
It comes as most states dropped compulsory testing for fully vaccinated travellers in recent weeks, as they try to boost their economies by making it easier for people to commute. Read on...
