With the coronavirus pandemic still raging in many parts of the world, leaders from more than 100 nations are heading to New York this week for the United Nations' annual high-level gathering a Covid-inflected, semi-locked down affair that takes place in one of the pandemic's hardest-hit cities of all. It will be a departure from the last in-person meeting of the General Assembly in 2019 and far different, too, from last year's all-virtual version.

 

Awaiting them: daunting challenges enough to scare anyone who runs a country, from an escalating climate crisis and severe vaccine inequities to Afghanistan's future under its new Taliban rulers and worsening conflicts in Myanmar and the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

Coronavirus LIVE updates: UK records another 29,612 Covid-19 cases

Another 29,612 people in the UK have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 7,429,746, according to official figures released Sunday.

 

The country also recorded another 56 coronavirus-related deaths, Xinhua news agency reported.

 

The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in the UK now stands at 135,203. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test.

 

The latest data came as the British government announced that a new antibody treatment for Covid-19 will be rolled out to the National Health Service (NHS) patients across the country from next week.

Coronavirus LIVE updates: Singapore reports 1,012 new Covid-19 cases

Singapore on Sunday reported 1,012 new cases of Covid-19 infection, bringing the total tally in the country to 77,804.

 

Of the new cases, 919 were in the community, 90 in migrant worker dormitories and three were imported cases, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a press release of Ministry of Health (MOH).

 

A total of 873 Covid-19 cases are currently warded in hospitals. There are currently 118 cases of serious illness requiring oxygen supplementation, and 21 in critical condition in the ICU, said the MOH.

 

As of Saturday, 82 per cent of the local population has completed two doses of Covid-19 vaccines, and 84 per cent has received at least one dose, according to the MOH.

Coronavirus LIVE updates: Cuba begins mass vaccination of kids as young as 2 against Covid-19

Cuba has become the first country in the world to begin the mass vaccination of kids as young as age 2 against Covid-19 with its homegrown vaccines.

 

While the coronavirus vaccines aren't mandatory, parents and children have been filling clinics, hospitals and even converted schools to get the shot for their kids, reported CNN.

 

"I am relieved," Laura Tijeras said just minutes after her 4-year-old daughter Anisol got the first dose of Cuba's home-grown Soberana, or Sovereign, vaccine. "A lot of people are still getting sick and with the vaccine. We are more protected."

 

During a single day at a policlinico in Havana, where CNN and other media were invited to film the vaccinations, more than 230 children ages 3 to 5 were vaccinated, the clinic's administrator said.

Coronavirus LIVE updates: Assam reports 259 new cases, 7 fatalities in last 24 hours

Assam reported 259 new Covid-19 cases and seven fatalities in the past 24 hours, as per the state health bulletin on Sunday.

 

Out of these 259 new cases, Kamrup, Jorhat, Sivasagar and Dibrugarh districts recorded the highest Covid-19 cases in the state, that is, 74, 34, 26, and 15 respectively.

 

The cumulative Covid-19 cases crossed 5.97 lakh in the state with 3,709 active cases.

 

Meanwhile, the state saw 5,87,115 cases being recovered in total with 259 recoveries in the last 24 hours. The recovery rate here is 98.08 per cent.

Coronavirus LIVE updates: Jharkhand reports 2 new cases in past 24 hours

With the continuous decline in Covid-19 cases in Jharkhand, the state reported only two new cases and 20 recoveries in the past 24 hours, according to the state Covid-19 bulletin.

 

Currently, Jharkhand has only 56 active Covid-19 cases. The cumulative caseload of the state stands at 3,48,114 since the pandemic has begun.

Coronavirus Live updates: Goa logs 84 new Covid-19 cases, two deaths; 79 recover

Goa on Sunday reported 84 fresh Covid-19 cases and two deaths while 79 patients recovered, a health department official said. The new additions pushed the tally of infections in the coastal state to 1,75,498 and the death toll to 3,294. The number of recoveries in Goa now stands at 1,71,430 and active cases at 774, the official said. "With 4,178 new tests, the total number of tests conducted in Goa so far has gone up to 12,99,606," he added.
