Jharkhand reports 154 new Covid-19 cases; tally rises to 105,935

Jharkhand's COVID-19 tally rose to 1,05,935 as 154 more people tested positive for the infection, a health department official said on Sunday. One more fatality pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 922, he said.
 
Ranchi district reported the highest number of new cases at 39, followed by Ramgarh (38), East Singhbhum (24) and Dhanbad (15), the official said. The state now has 3,116 active COVID-19 cases, while 1,01,897 people have been cured of the disease so far, he said. Jharkhand has tested 10,693 samples for COVID-19 in the last 24-hours, the official added.

Canadian hospitals under pressure amid rising Covid-19 cases

Canadian hospitals are facing growing pressure as Covid-19 cases continue to rise in the country amid the ongoing second wave of the pandemic. Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam on Saturday described the situation in Western Canada, Quebec and Ontario as "worrisome" and it is straining healthcare resources, reports Xinhua news agency.
 
The latest national-level data showed daily averages of 4,348 new cases in the past seven days, said Tam.
 
"Outbreaks continue to contribute to COVID-19 spread in Canada, including increased activity among vulnerable populations and settings -- elderly adults, long-term care residents, and Indigenous communities," she said in a statement.

Pakistan's Covid-19 situation worsens with 2,443 new cases

The COVID-19 situation in Pakistan seems to worsen as over 2,000 new positive cases have been reported for the third consecutive day, reported ARY News.
 
According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), as many as 2,443 more infections were detected over the past 24 hours, lifting the national tally of COVID-19 cases to 356,904.
 
The number of active cases in the country has also soured to 26,538, while 32 people have succumbed to the virus in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 7,141.

Arunachal Pradesh reports more Covid-19 recoveries than fresh cases

Arunachal Pradesh reported more COVID-19 recoveries than fresh cases in a single-day as 102 people were cured of the disease while 34 new infections pushed the tally to 15,792, a health department official said on Sunday.
 
Altogether 102 people were discharged from hospitals on Saturday, taking the total number of recoveries in the state to 14,421, State Surveillance Officer (SSO), Dr Lobsong Jampa said.
 
The recovery rate among coronavirus patients in the state currently stands at 91.31 per cent while the death ratio stands at 0.30 per cent. Arunachal Pradesh currently has 1,323 active cases.

Pakistan prepares for second wave of Covid-19 pandemic

After successfully flattening the Covid-19 curve earlier this year, Pakistan has recently witnessed a resurgence of confirmed cases and the country is now preparing and galvanizing its efforts to control a second wave of the pandemic. As of Sunday, Pakistan's overall coronavirus caseload and death toll stood at 354,461 and 7,109, respectively, reports Xinhua news agency.
 
Health officials in the country have said that the second wave has alreadystarted in Pakistan, urging citizens to take extra precautions to counter it.
 
The National Command and Operation Center of Pakistan, which oversees the country's coronavirus response, recently made it mandatory for citizens to wear masks at public places.

WHO confirms 657,312 coronavirus cases worldwide in single day

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide has risen by 657,312 within the past 24 hours marking the largest daily increase since the outbreak of the pandemic, the World Health Organisation said on Saturday. As of 19:30 GMT, the global tally of COVID-19 infections amounts to 53,164,803.
 
Most of those new cases were registered in Europe (over 285,000) and the Americas (over 269,000). Meanwhile, the death toll worldwide has reached 1,300,576, with 9,797 fatalities being recorded over the past day.

Coronavirus latest update: Mizoram reports 25 new Covid-19 cases

As many as 25 new COVID-19 cases were reported from Mizoram in the last 24 hours, making the total cases mount to 3,393, on Sunday.
 
As per the health department of Mizoram, a total of 2,820 people have been discharged in the state, after recovering from the infection. The death toll has reached 4. The active cases stand at 569.

China finds coronavirus on frozen beef, tripe from various countries

The eastern Chinese city of Jinan said it has found the new coronavirus on beef and tripe, and on packaging for these products, from Brazil, New Zealand and Bolivia as China ramps up testing on frozen foods.
 
The importers were a unit of Guotai International Group and Shanghai Zhongli Development Trade, the Jinan Municipal Health Commission said in a statement on its website late on Saturday.
 
The entry ports were Shanghai's Yangshan port customs and outer port customs, it said. The statement from the city in Shandong province did not name the companies that shipped the products.

Mexico breaches 1 million coronavirus cases mark, nears 100,000 deaths

Mexico has registered more than 1 million total coronavirus cases and nearly 100,000 test-confirmed deaths, though officials agree the number is probably much higher. Health Director General Ricardo Corts Alcal said late Saturday the number of confirmed cases had reached 1,003,253, with at least 98,259 deaths from COVID-19.
 
How did Mexico get here? By marching resolutely, even defiantly, against many internationally accepted practices in pandemic management, from face mask wearing, to lockdowns, testing and contact tracing.
 
What is more, officials in Mexico claim science is on their side. Assistant Health Secretary Hugo Lpez-Gatell says any wider testing would be a waste of time, effort and money.
