Covid-19 linked to high risk of blood clots during surgery: Study

Recent or current Covid-19 infection can increase the risk of dangerous blood clots during surgery, finds a study, IANS reported.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) -- a combination of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism -- is a condition in which blood clots form in the veins and has been described as the number one preventable cause of death in hospitalised patients.

The study, published in Anaesthesia, showed that VTEs are 50 per cent more likely to occur in patients with current Covid-19 infection while those with recent infection are almost twice at risk.

Majority of Indians experience no or mild side effects post 2 doses of Covid vax: Survey

Majority of Indians experienced no or only mild side effects after taking two doses of COVID-19 vaccines Covishield and Covaxin, a survey conducted across the country said, PTI reported.

A massive COVID-19 vaccination drive was launched in India on January 16, with two vaccines -- Covishield, manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, and Covaxin, manufactured by Bharat Biotech.

Community social media platform LocalCircles said that according to its nationwide survey, "70 per cent of Indians after taking the first dose of Covishield and 64 per cent with Covaxin experienced no or mild side effects."

Bihar govt gears up to tackle third wave of Covid-19

Keeping in view a possible third wave of Covid-19, the Bihar health department is gearing up for arrangement of medical facilities in the state. The aim is to minimise casualties during the possible third wave of the pandemic, IANS reported.

The people of Bihar had witnessed mayhem due to the complete collapse of the state health infrastructure during the second wave of Covid-19 this year.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar held a meeting on Covid crisis management with the Chief Secretary on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of 'Unlock-six'. The 'Unlock-five' will end on August 26.

Australian travel bans lowered Covid cases by 88%: Study

Australia's national science agency has developed a tool capable of forecasting the number of coronavirus infections on each international flight to the country, IANS reported.

The model, which was developed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), uses the number of incoming travellers and the rate of Covid-19 infection in their country of origin to estimate case numbers aboard a flight, reports Xinhua news agency.

Jess Liebig, a CSIRO research scientist, said it would act as another tool to aid government decisions on travel restrictions and opening borders.

Odisha reports 69 Covid deaths, 887 cases in 24 hrs

Odisha on Wednesday reported death of another 69 persons due to Covid-19, taking the death toll in the state to 7,562.
 
According to State Covid-19 dashboard, the death of 25 persons were confirmed in Cuttack district while 21 deaths were reported in Jagatsinghpur, nine in Dhenkanal and 3 in Khurda & Balasore districts each.
 
Similarly, Angul, Ganjam & Puri districts reported two casualties each and once Covid-19 death was reported from both Bhadrak & Keonjhar districts, it says.
 
"This list does not reflect deaths occurring on a particular day. It gives details of past deaths for which the death audit process has been duly completed and the cause of death has been identified as due to Covid-19," the health department said.

101 new cases push Arunachal Pradesh's Covid-19 tally to 52,409

Arunachal Pradesh's Covid-19 tally rose to 52,409 on Wednesday as 101 more people tested positive for the infection, a senior health official said.
 
The coronavirus death toll remained unchanged at 259 as no fresh fatality was reported, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said.
 
The Capital Complex region recorded the highest number of fresh cases at 32, followed by West Kameng (eight) and Upper Siang (seven).
 
The state now has 1,127 active cases, while 51,023 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 136 on Tuesday, he said.

Kamala Harris: US to provide Vietnam 1 million more vaccine doses

The United States will provide an additional 1 million coronavirus vaccine doses to Vietnam, Vice President Kamala Harris announced Wednesday, offering additional aid to a country currently grappling with a fresh coronavirus surge and stubbornly low vaccination rates.
 
Harris, speaking at the top of a bilateral meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, said that the doses would begin to arrive within the next 24 hours. That brings the total vaccine donation to Vietnam to 6 million doses from the U.S.
 
In addition to the new vaccine doses, the U.S. will provide $23 million in American Rescue Plan and emergency funding through the Centers for Disease Control and the United States Agency for International Development to help Vietnam expand distribution and access to vaccines, combat the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare for future disease threats. The Defense Department is also delivering 77 freezers to store the vaccines throughout the country.

Coronavirus LIVE updates: One death, 55 fresh virus cases in Punjab

One more person died from coronavirus in Punjab on Tuesday as 55 fresh cases took the state's infection tally to 6,00,342, according to a medical bulletin.
 
The infection has claimed 16,355 lives in the state till now.
 
The fatality count also included a death that was not reported earlier.
 
The number of active cases stood at 423.
 
Jalandhar reported nine cases, followed by eight in Ferozepur and five in Muktsar.

Covid-19: Chhattisgarh sees 47 cases, 1 death; over 35,000 tested

Chhattisgarh on Tuesday recorded 47 new cases of COVID-19 and one death, taking the total number of infections to 10,04,230 and the toll to 13,555, a health official said.
 
The number of recoveries reached 9,90,022 as 60 people were discharged from hospitals and 42 completed home isolation during the day, leaving the state with 653 active cases, he said.
 
"Raipur district reported seven new infections, taking the caseload to 1,57,849, including 3,139 deaths. Jashpur recorded seven new cases as well and Janjgir-Champa six, among other districts. With 35,855 samples being examined during the day, the number of tests in the state went up to 1,21,97,950," the official said.
