Excess body weight linked with Covid-19 mortality in adults: Study
Excess body weight may be associated with significant rates of COVID-19 mortality among adult populations around the globe, according to a study.
The research, published in the journal Public Health in Practice, analysed plausible associations of COVID-19 mortality and excess weight in nearly 5.5 billion adults from 154 countries around the world.
The researchers from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the US employed cutting-edge techniques of statistical analyses to identify potential patterns in data.

Blood thinners significantly reduce Covid-related mortality, hospitalisation: study
COVID-19 patients who use blood thinners may have a nearly 50 per cent reduced risk of death and a 43 per cent lower risk of hospitalisation, according to a study published in Lancet's EClinical Medicine journal.
The research was conducted on 6,195 patients over the age of 18 who were diagnosed with COVID-19 from March 4 to August 27, 2020 in 12 hospitals and 60 clinics in the US.
The researchers from the University of Minnesota, US, and Basel University in Switzerland analysed the relationship between 90-day anticoagulation therapy among out-patients before COVID-19 diagnosis and the risk for hospitalisation and mortality.
Ladakh reports 10 new Covid-19 cases
Ladakh recorded 10 fresh COVID-19 cases, raising its tally to 20,822, officials said on Monday.
They said 22 patients were cured of the disease in the past 24 hours, taking the number of those recuperated 20,653.
As of now, there are 52 active cases in the union territory -- 47 in Leh district and five in Kargil district, the officials said.
Russia records 25,781 Covid-19 cases in past 24 hours
Russia recorded 25,781 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, up from 25,769 the day before, bringing the cumulative total to 7,612,317, the federal response centre said on Monday.
"Over the past day, 25,781 COVID-19 cases were confirmed across 85 Russian regions, including 2,034 cases (7.9%) without clinical symptoms," the centre said, adding that the rate of increase stands at 0.34%.
Recoveries outnumber fresh Covid-19 cases in Odisha
Single-day recoveries outnumbered fresh COVID-19 cases in Odisha as 606 patients recuperated from the highly infectious disease while 407 new infections pushed the tally to 10,28,366, a health department official said on Monday.
A total of 10,15,018 people have recovered from COVID-19 so far, he said.
The 407 new infections were reported from 18 of the state's 30 districts.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation told the Bombay High Court on Monday that it does not apprehend a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the city as the vaccination drive is going on smoothly, with over 42 lakh people fully vaccinated and over 82 lakh people having received the first dose.
BMC counsel Anil Sakhare also told the HC that 2,586 bed-ridden people have so far been administered both the doses of COVID-19 vaccine while 3,942 such people have got the first jab.
The work is on. It is going on smoothly. Now, there is no shortage of vaccines too. Mumbai is safe. We do not see a third wave (of the COVID-19) coming, Sakhare said.
70% of India's adult population administered first vaccine: Mandaviya
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday said that 70 per cent of India's adult population has been administered the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
"Strong Nation, Rapid Vaccination: India has administered the first dose of #COVID19 vaccine on 70% of the population. Under PM @NarendraModiji, India is achieving new landmarks in the fight against the pandemic. Keep it up India, let us fight Corona," the minister said in a tweet.
