Nearly 15 million in US missed second dose of Covid-19 jab

More than one in 10, amounting to nearly 15 million people, in the US have missed their second dose of the Covid vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
 
According to the CDC data, as of June 16, nearly 11 per cent of people who had sufficient time to get the second dose missed their ideal window.
 
The number has increased from 8 per cent earlier in the year, but CDC spokesperson Kate Fowlie said the rise was "not unexpected", the Washington Post reported on Saturday. Read here

Serbian athlete tests positive for Covid-19 in Tokyo

A member of Serbia's rowing team for the Olympics has tested positive for the Covid-19 virus after arrival at the Haneda Airport in Tokyo.
 
This is the second instance of an overseas Olympics contingent reporting a positive coronavirus case on arrival. Last month, two members of Uganda's Olympics team tested positive for the coronavirus. While one tested positive at the Narita airport, the second case came a few days later from the team's base city in Izumisano.
 
Kyodo news reported that the rower, in his 30s, tested positive after an antigen test conducted at the airport quarantine station on Saturday. The rower has been isolated. Four teammates of his were designated as close contacts and have been placed under two weeks of quarantine at a facility near the airport. (IANS)

Odisha reports 2,870 fresh cases, 42 more fatalities

Odisha on Sunday reported 2,870 fresh Covid-19 cases, raising the tally to 9,21,896, while the death toll climbed to 4,196 with 42 more fatalities, a health department official said.
 
The state now has 30,227 active cases and 8,87,420 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 3,158 since Saturday, he said. (PTI)

Puducherry logs 172 new coronavirus cases

The union territory of Puducherry reported 172 new coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours taking the overall tally to 1,17,959, a senior official of the Department of Health and Family Welfare Services said on Sunday.
 
A 60-year old male patient succumbed to the infection at Puducherry government hospital, taking the toll to 1,761, Director of Health S Mohan Kumar said.
 
The 172 new cases were spread over Puducherry (137), Karaikal(23), Yanam (5) and Mahe (7), he said. The number of active cases stood at 2,006 (305 in hospitals and the remaining 1,701 in home isolation).

Delhi govt permits reopening stadium, sports complexes without spectators

The Delhi government has allowed the reopening of stadium and sports complexes without spectators from Monday, an order issued by the DDMA said on Sunday. There will be strict adherence to standard operating procedure and other guidelines of the government, and compliance of Covid appropriate behaviour while opening the stadia and sports complexes, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) said.
 
However, cinema halls, multiplexes, swimming pools, spas, schools and colleges, social, political, cultural, religious and other such gatherings will remain prohibited, the order stated. Delhi Metro trains and public transport buses will continue to operate with 50 percent seating capacity, it said.
 
Last week, the DDMA allowed the opening of gyms and yoga institutes with half their capacity as well as weddings at banquet and marriage halls and hotels with a limit of 50 percent attendance. The prohibited and restricted activities will continue till 5 am on July 12, the order said.

Covishield vaccine jab receivers may be denied entry to European Union

As the European Union (EU) is reopening borders to non-EU tourists especially those who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, travellers inoculated with the Indian-made AstraZeneca vaccine, or Covishield, could face problems when entering the bloc, the European Commission suggested on Friday.
 
While the AstraZeneca vaccine produced in Europe, branded Vaxzevira, has been greenlighted by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the Indian version Covishield has not even requested for the market authorization, according to Stefan De Keersmaecker, the Commission's spokesman for health issues, the Xinhua news agency reported. Mizoram reports 243 new coronavirus positive cases

Mizoram reported 243 new COVID cases on Saturday, taking the cumulative caseload to 21,246 in the state, informed the state Department of Information and Public Relations.
 
There are 3,897 active cases in the state. A total of 17254 people have recovered from the infection.
 
The COVID-19 death toll in the state stands at 95, while the positivity rate is at 6.75 per cent. The cumulative tally of positive COVID-19 cases in the country stands at 3,05,02,362, including 2,96,05,779 recoveries, 4,01,050 deaths and 4,95,533 active cases.

94% of patients with cancer respond well to coronavirus vaccine: Study

 Nearly 95 per cent of people with cancer developed a good immune response to the Covid-19 mRNA vaccines three to four weeks after receiving their second dose, finds a new study co-authored by Indian-origin researchers.
 
The study, published in the journal Cancer Cell, indicated that among the 131 patients studied, 94 per cent developed antibodies to the coronavirus. READ MORE...

Andaman and Nicobar Islands report only three new Covid-19 cases

The union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands reported only three new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the tally to 7,478, a health official said on Sunday. All the new cases were detected during contact tracing, he said.
 
The archipelago now has only 20 active COVID-19 cases, of which 18 are in the South Andaman district and two in the North and Middle Andaman district. The Nicobar district of the union territory is now COVID-19 free, the official said. Five more persons recuperated from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 7,330.
