The third wave of COVID-19 will be a "ripple" but only if there is no significantly faster-spreading mutant, according to projections of the 'Sutra' model for COVID-19.
 
According to the Sutra analysis, if there is a faster-spreading mutant, the magnitude of the third wave will be "comparable to the first one."

Less than 50,000 new Covid cases in India for eighth day straight

India saw a single-day rise of 43,071 COVID-19 infections, which took the tally of cases to 3,05,45,433, while active cases have declined to 4,85,350, according to Union health ministry data updated on Sunday.
 
The death toll has climbed to 4,02,005 with 955 more fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.
 
The active cases have further declined to 4,85,350 and comprise 1.59 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has improved to 97.09 per cent, the ministry said. It said active cases have declined by 10,183 in a span of 24 hours.

WHO welcomes report on efficacy of longer gaps between AstraZeneca doses

A report from Oxford University saying that a longer gap between doses of AstraZeneca vaccines still provides protection is “very reassuring” for supply-strapped countries, World Health Organization chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said.
 
Joachim Hombach, head of the WHO’s expert panel, said it was “great news” on spaced dosing for the vaccine, which would add flexibility to dosing schedules. India sees 43,071 new Covid cases, daily positivity rate at 2.34%

As many 43,071 new COVID-19 cases were reported in India in the last 24 hours, informed the Union Health Ministry on Sunday. This is the eighth consecutive day with less than 50,000 new cases reported in a day. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the recovery rate of the country has climbed to 97.09 per cent. With 52,299 recoveries in the last 24 hours, daily recoveries continued to outnumber the daily new cases for the 52nd consecutive day. The cumulative active cases now stand at 4,85,350.
 
"The weekly positivity rate is currently at 2.44 per cent while the daily positivity rate stands at 2.34 per cent," the ministry said.
 
With substantially ramped up testing capacity across the country, a total of 18,38,490 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours. The country has conducted 41,82,54,953 tests so far. Around 35.12 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far under the ongoing nationwide vaccination drive.

Body of Covid patient cremated 75 days after death

A Covid victim's body has been found to be lying in the mortuary for more than 75 days now in the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College (LLRMMC) in Meerut, because his wife could not pay Rs 15,000. The victim, Naresh, 29, died of Covid on April 15.
 
His wife Gudiya, came from Basti district to collect her husband's body but was reportedly asked to pay Rs 15,000.
 
"The doctors asked for Rs 15,000 but I did not have the money. They said they would cremate the body," she told reporters. The hospital, meanwhile, has denied the allegations.

Global Covid-19 caseload tops 183.4 million

The overall global Covid-19 caseload has topped 183.4 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 3.96 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
 
In its latest update on Sunday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 183,404,186 and 3,969,635, respectively.
 
The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 33,713,729 and 605,493, respectively, according to the CSSE. In terms of infections, India follows in the second place with 30,502,362 cases.

Centre sanctions funds from PMCares for new vaccine-testing lab

The Centre has sanctioned funds from the PMCares Fund for setting up a vaccine-testing laboratory here, Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy said on Saturday.
 
I thank Honble PM Shri narendramodi Ji for sanctioning funds for setting up of Vaccine Testing Lab at Hyderabad. A big step forward towards comprehensive development of pharma sector in Hyderabad, which will also boost production of COVID-9 vaccines, Reddy, a Lok Sabha member from Secunderabad, tweeted.

Number of Covid vaccine doses administered in India crossed 35 crore: Health ministry

The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has exceeded 35 crore, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday.
 
As the new phase of universalisation of COVID-19 vaccination commenced from June 21, more than 57.36 lakh vaccine doses were given in the country on Saturday, as per a provisional report up to 7 pm.
 
The ministry said 28,33,691 first vaccine doses and 3,29,889 second doses were given in the 18-44 years category on Saturday.

Delhi records less than 100 Covid-19 cases for third consecutive day

Delhi reported 86 new COVID-19 cases and five deaths in the last 24 hours. The national capital has recorded less than 100 cases of COVID-19 for the third consecutive day.
 
The positivity rate of the national capital dipped to 0.11 per cent, according to the Delhi Health Bulletin, which stated there are 1,016 active cases of COVID-19 in the city.
 
According to the Delhi government health bulletin, the total count of cases has gone up to 14,34,460. The recovery tally of the national capital stands at 14,08,465 recoveries while 24,988 people have succumbed to the COVID-19 infection. READ ON...
