US coronavirus update: Cases rising again, doubling over three weeks
The Covid-19 curve in the US is rising again after months of decline, with the number of new cases per day doubling over the past three weeks, driven by the fast-spreading delta variant, lagging vaccination rates and Fourth of July gatherings.
Confirmed infections climbed to an average of about 23,600 a day on Monday, up from 11,300 on June 23, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
And all but two states -- Maine and South Dakota -- reported that case numbers have gone up over the past two weeks.
"It is certainly no coincidence that we are looking at exactly the time that we would expect cases to be occurring after the July Fourth weekend," said Dr. Bill Powderly, co-director of the infectious-disease division at Washington University's School of Medicine in St. Louis. Read on...

Jobs lost, middle-class Indians line up for rations and 'worry about meals'
The staple was among items the 35-year-old and her husband could no longer afford after they both first lost work when India’s capital New Delhi went into lockdown in March last year. Their distress deepened after this April due to a surge in Covid-19 infections. They’re now borrowing money to buy food and must watch their school-aged kids eat less, often going to bed on empty stomachs.
“I can’t sleep at nights,” said Chanchal from her home in Lal Gumbad Basti, a neighborhood of migrant workers about 20 minutes away from the nation’s parliament. “I’m so tired of worrying about arranging the next meal.”
Families like Chanchal’s — two wage earners with some savings, living in rented accommodation — are among legions of Indians who saw their economic toehold ripped away in lockdowns over the last 12 months. More than 15 million Indians lost their jobs in May alone at the height of a devastating wave that overwhelmed hospitals and crematoriums, according to the Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy. Amid super spreader events, vaccine shortage, will India face a third wave?
The coronavirus pandemic has taken the centrestage in India’s public discourse since March 2020 when the country saw the first lockdown being imposed. Till July 9, 2021, India had officially reported a cumulative 30.7 million cases of Covid-19 with more than 400,000 deaths. The months of April and May 2021 saw India face a brutal second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. At its peak India saw more than 400,000 new cases of Covid-19 every day with more than 4,000 daily deaths reported during this period.
Even as experts debate the actual number of cases or deaths in the country in this wave, speculation is rife about the timing and magnitude of a third wave of the pandemic in India. Before we look at the chances of a third wave of Covid-19 pandemic in India, let us take stock of where we stand. Read on...

Third Covid-19 wave warnings being treated like 'weather updates': Govt
The health ministry on Tuesday said the third wave prediction needs to be taken seriously and not treated as some casual weather update since its prevention lies in the hands of people.
“It is not like we can go for a vacation before monsoons. This is a continuous fight between the virus and the human being. What we fail to understand is that adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour or lack of it is what will prevent or cause any future waves,” said Lav Agarwal, joint secretary, health ministry.
The government, while sharing visuals of crowding in market places and tourist hotspots in Delhi, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, said a third wave may be caused by such behaviour. Fifty-five districts in India are reporting more than 10 per cent positivity for the week ended July 13 while 73 are reporting over 100 cases. Read on...
