Copa America ends with 179 confirmed cases of Covid: Brazil health ministry

There were 179 known Covid-19 cases related to the Copa America, Brazil's health ministry said, up 13 from its previous update 17 days ago.
 
The ministry did not say how seriously the disease evolved in any of the infected.
 
The figure also did not contemplate possible contagion among a few thousand guests who watched Lionel Messi's Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 on Saturday in the final at Maracana Stadium. The final was the only match in the tournament to have spectators in the stands.

Mumbai Covid-19 centre employees allege dues not paid; approach police

Twelve contractual employees of a Covid-19 care centre at the Bandra-Kurla Complex here have complained to the Mumbai police against their placement agency for allegedly not paying their salaries since the last three months, a police official said.
 
The employees in their complaint lodged at the BKC police station alleged that one Gaurav Joshi, who runs the placement agency, hired their services, but they have not got their salaries since April this year, he said.
 
They also alleged that Joshi had threatened them. He earlier assured to get their dues released, but it has not happened so far, the official said quoting the complaint. Read on...

Pondicherry records 124 new coronavirus cases

Puducherry on Tuesday added 124 fresh cases to its Covid-19 tally, which surged to 1,19,181.
 
The new cases were less than 100 on Monday but shot up to 124 today at the end of examination of swabs of 5756 people.
 
No new fatality was reported for second straight day today and the toll remained 1,771.
 
The 124 new cases were spread over Puducherry 106, Karaikal 15 and Mahe 3, while Yanam an enclave of Puducherry in Andhra Pradesh did not report any new cases of infection.

Canada to donate 17.7 mn AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine to other countries

Canada announced its decision to donate 17.7 million doses of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine to low- and middle-income countries.
 
While addressing a press conference on Monday, Procurement Minister Anita Anand said that the vaccine doses are a part of the Canadian government's advance purchase agreement with the company and would be distributed through COVAX, reports Xinhua news agency.
 
COVAX is a global vaccine-sharing initiative jointly co-ordinated by the World Health Organization, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Read on...

Israel okays 3rd Covid vaccine shot for adults at risk

Israel's Health Ministry has instructed four health maintenance organisations to start offering the third doses of the Covid-19 vaccine for adults with weak immune systems.
 
The direction on Monday came a day after Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz announced the move on Sunday, saying the Ministry is looking into the possible authorisation of booster shots to the general public, reports Xinhua news agency.
 
The move came amid Pfizer's request to the regulators of the US and Europe for approving a booster dose of its vaccine.
 
The ministry has reported a steady rise in the number of infections driven by the spread of the Delta variant.
 
On Sunday, 423 new cases were diagnosed across Israel.

Special teams sent to 2 UP districts showing surge in Covid-19 cases

A surge of 28 new Covid cases in Sitapur district and 20 new cases in Sultanpur have become a cause of worry for the Uttar Pradesh government, especially since Covid cases in all other districts are showing an appreciable downtrend.
 
The cases were recorded on Monday.
 
A team of experts has been sent to these two districts to assess the reasons for the surge in cases.
 
Health teams from the surveillance unit have reached Sitapur and Sultanpur to collect details. Samples of patients will also be sent for genome sequencing.
 
Nodal officer Sitapur Dr P.K. Singh said, "The patients belong to three different areas. None of them has a travel history. Each of the 28 cases was asymptomatic. In fact, some of them were attendants of patients brought to the health facility. Strangely, they tested negative." Read on...

Sputnik V soft launched in over 50 cities in India: Dr Reddy's Laboratories

Dr Reddys Laboratories Ltd, which soft-launched Russia's Covid-19 vaccine, Sputnik V here on May 14 has expanded the pilot project to over 50 other cities and towns in the country.
 
In a tweet on Monday night, the city-based drug maker said it will strengthen the commercial rollout of Sputnik V in the coming weeks.

Citizens' group starts drive to vaccinate transgender community in Pune

A group of citizens working towards Covid-19 vaccination of the underprivileged people has now extended its reach to the transgender community in Maharashtra's Pune city.
 
As part of the 'VaxAll Initiative', 169 transgenders were vaccinated at a private hospital here on Monday, an official from the medical facility said.
 
The volunteers' group has set up an exclusive vaccination centre at the Sancheti Hospital here for the transgender community from July 12 to 15.
 
An outreach programme is in place to spread awareness among the transgender community members and ensure most of them get vaccinated via this camp, the group said in a statement. Read on...

Sikkim reports 90 new Covid-19 cases, tally rises to 22,397

Sikkim has reported 90 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, pushing the caseload to 22,397, a health department bulletin said on Monday.
 
With two more patients succumbing to the disease, the Covid- 19 death toll has risen to 317, it said.
 
East Sikkim reported 42 new cases followed by West Sikkim (26), South Sikkim (17), and North Sikkim (five).

Meghalaya logs 273 new Covid-19 cases, 5 fresh fatalities

Meghalaya's Covid-19 tally on Monday rose to 54,853 as 273 more people tested positive for the infection, while five fresh fatalities pushed the northeastern state's coronavirus death toll to 913, a senior health official said.
 
Three patients succumbed to the disease in the East Khasi Hills district, and one each in South Garo Hills and West Garo Hills respectively, Health Services director Aman War said.
 
As many as 523 more people were cured of the disease, taking the total number of recoveries to 49,830, he said.

Covid-19 cases soar in over 40 US states amid falling vaccination rates

Covid-19 cases rose in more than 40 US states over the past week as the vaccination rate has slowed down and the highly transmissible Delta variant continues to spread.
 
The country is averaging about 19,455 new cases over the last seven days, a 47 per cent increase from the week prior, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, Xinhua reported.
 
It marked the largest weekly rise since April 2020, according to a Bloomberg report.
 
More than 99 per cent of Covid-19 deaths in the United States in June were among unvaccinated people, said Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
