World coronavirus update: Brazil reports 1,211 more Covid-19 deaths

Brazil has registered 1,211 more Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, raising its national death toll to 564,773, the health ministry said on Tuesday.
 
Meanwhile, the total caseload rose to 20,212,642 after 34,885 new cases were detected.
 
Brazil currently has the world's second-highest pandemic death toll after the United States, and the third-largest caseload after the United States and India.

South Korea exceeds 2,000 daily cases for 1st time

South Korea's daily increase in coronavirus infections has exceeded 2,000 for the first time since the start of the pandemic, continuing an alarming spread despite the enforcement of strict virus restrictions in large population centers.
 
Health Minister Kwon Deok-cheol on Wednesday pleaded for people to stay home during the holiday break around Liberation Day on Friday. He said that in our fight against Covid-19, we are entering a new phase, a new crisis.
 
Officials said more than 1,400 of the 2,223 new cases are in the Seoul metropolitan region. Kwon says transmissions are also spreading at faster speeds in other parts of the country.

Delhi coronavirus update: Govt approves construction of 7 makeshift Covid hospitals

The Delhi health department on Tuesday received the financial approval for the construction of seven makeshift hospitals that will be completed in the next six months to deal with a possible surge in coronavirus cases in the city, PTI reported.
 
Health Minister Satyendar Jain said these makeshift hospitals will have 7,000 ICU beds and will be constructed at Sarita Vihar, Shalimar Bagh, Sultanpuri, Kirari, Raghubir Nagar, GTB Hospital and Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya.

Telangana coroanvirus update: 494 new Covid-19 cases recorded

Telangana on Tuesday recorded 494 new Covid-19 cases taking the total number of positive cases in the state to 6,50,353.
 
With three more persons succumbing to the virus, the death toll rose to 3,831, a state government bulletin said. The number of active cases stood at 8,112. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation reported the highest number of 80 cases followed by Karimnagar (51) and Warangal Urban (45). A total of 89,037 samples were tested on Tuesday.

Cumulative Covid vaccine doses nearly 520 million: Govt

The cumulative Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has reached nearly 520 million, the Union health ministry said on Tuesday. More than 37,76,765 doses have been administered during the day, according to the 7 pm provisional report. The ministry said 20,47,733 first doses were administered and 4,05,719 second doses in the age group 18-44 years on Tuesday.
 
Cumulatively, 18,20,95,467 people in the age group 18-44 years across states and union territories have received their first dose and 1,29,39,239 their second dose since the start of phase-3 of the vaccination drive.
 
Five states -- Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh -- have administered more than 1 crore cumulative doses of COVID-19 vaccine in the age group 18-44 years, the ministry said.

Bangladesh to lift lockdown today

Bangladesh is all set to end its weeks-long strict lockdown imposed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic today.
 
The lifting of the lockdown will allow public and vehicular movement, while all shops and offices will also reopen.
Bangladesh's Cabinet Division issued a circular in this regard on Sunday.
 
According to the circular, buses and trains can carry passengers at full capacity but can't operate more than 50 per cent every day.
 
The resurgence in Covid-19 cases since June prompted the government to enforce the strict lockdown that began on July 1 and continued till July 14.
 
Bangladesh re-imposed the lockdown from July 23 to August 5 after relaxing restrictions for a week on the occasion of Eid al-Adha festival on July 21.

Andhra Pradesh sees 1,461 more Covid cases, 15 deaths

Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday registered 1,461 new Covid cases, taking the state's overall tally beyond 1.98 million, even as its active cases dropped to 18,882. As many as 2,113 more persons recovered in the past 24 hours, taking the state's total number of recoveries to over 1.95 million.

Kerala coronavirus update: Shops in malls in Kerala to open from today

Shops in malls have been permitted to open from today on the same conditions stipulated for other outlets and after making all precautionary arrangements, the Kerala government said on Saturday.
 
In an order issued by the Disaster Management department of the state, persons have to be deployed at all entry points of malls to ensure Covid-19 protocols, like wearing of masks, use of hand sanitisers, temperature checks and social distancing, and other conditions are strictly followed before people enter the shops.
 
"Special teams shall be deployed by the District Collectors to monitor the effective functioning of the Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) and to ensure that RRTs strengthen surveillance and contact tracing significantly," the order, issued by Chief Secretary V P Joy, said.
 
The present order is in addition to the one issued on August 4 permitting opening of shops, markets, banks, offices, financial institutions, factories, industrial establishments, open tourist spaces and other establishments six days in a week from Monday to Saturday.

Himachal Pradesh recorded 419 fresh coronavirus cases and two deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of infections and fatalities to 2,08,616 and 3,521 respectively. A total of 185 patients cured from the infection, according to the data provided by state health department.

Karnataka coronavirus update: Dakshina Kannada logs more Covid cases than Bengaluru

Bengaluru logged 315 Covid cases, 492 recoveries, and three deaths in the last 24 hours while the maximum cases (37) in Karnataka were reported from Dakshina Kannada district bordering Kerala, according to the state government health bulletin.
 
Active cases in the state capital remained at 8,198 and 64,552 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours. The number of micro containment zones remained at 156 and Mahadevapura zone had the highest number of such zones, at 46.

Covid-19 pandemic: Novavax shot may get nod in India even before US

Covid vaccine from US major Novavax may get a nod from the Indian drug regulator even before the vaccine is approved in the US.
 
The company and its partner Serum Institute of India (SII) have, on August 5, applied for an emergency use authorisation with the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) and regulatory bodies in Indonesia and the Philippines. India has said any vaccine, which has approval from stringent regulatory bodies like the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the UK, among others, would be approved for use in India.

Maharashtra coronavirus update: Offline verification for issuing travel passes for suburban trains from today

An offline verification procedure for Covid-19 vaccination and issuing monthly passes to fully inoculated people to enable them to board local trains will start at 53 suburban stations in Mumbai from today, the city civic body said on Tuesday.
