India's active Covid cases have now come down below 600,000

India reported 50,040 new Covid-19 cases, slightly higher than Saturday and 1,258 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to data released by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Sunday.
 
The total caseload rose to 3,02,33,183 as India crossed the mark of over three crore Covid cases on Wednesday.
 
This is the tenth consecutive day in the last two months when the death toll has been below the 2,000-mark. India has become the second country after the US to record more than three crore cases of Covid. India added one crore cases in the last 50 days.

432 new Covid cases in Thane district of Maharashtra, 18 more deaths

With the addition of 432 new cases of coronavirus, the infection count in Maharashtra's Thane district has gone up to 5,30,720, an official said on Sunday.
 
Besides these new cases reported on Saturday, the virus also claimed the lives of 18 more people, raising the death toll in the district to 10,629. The COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane is two per cent, he added.
 
Details of recovered and under-treatment patients were not provided by the district administration. In neighbouring Palghar district, the COVID-19 case count has gone up to 1,16,033, while the death toll has reached 2,537, another official said.

Delta Covid variant likely driving huge infection surge in S African province

The Delta variant of COVID-19, identified in at least 85 countries and first detected in India, is likely responsible for the exponentially rising daily number of virus cases in South Africa's economic hub, Gauteng province, a leading epidemiologist has said here.
 
Official data would be released by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) next week, but it is likely to show that there had been an increase in the transmission of the Delta variant, which is 60 per cent more transmissible than the Beta variant -- first identified in South Africa, Shabir Madhi, director of Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytical Research Unit at Wits University, told news channel ENCA.

Brazil reports 1,593 more Covid deaths, 64,134 new infections

Brazil registered 1,593 more deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the national death toll to 512,735, the health ministry said Saturday.
 
A total of 64,134 new infections were detected, raising the total caseload to 18,386,894, the ministry said.
 
Brazil has the world's second highest COVID-19 death toll, after the United States, and the third largest caseload, following the United States and India. The South American country, which is experiencing a new wave of infections with hospitals overwhelmed by patients, has a mortality rate of 244 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, said the ministry.

Third wave of coronavirus won't be as severe as second wave: ICMR official

Medical experts have warned that the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic could hit India around October this year. However, there are contrasting opinions on whether the third wave would be more severe than the previous waves of the infection.
 
On Saturday, Samiran Panda, head of epidemiology at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said the third wave of Covid won’t be as severe as the second wave. “More vaccination and Covid appropriate behaviour could play an important role in mitigating these waves. US average daily Covid-19 vaccination drops by over 50%: CDC

The latest 7-day average number of administered vaccine doses per day decreased by 55.3 per cent from the previous week, according to a weekly report of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
 
As of June 24, the 7-day average number of administered vaccine doses reported to the CDC per day was 0.37 million, according to the report released on Friday.
 
About 45.8 per cent of the US population was fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and 53.9 per cent of the population received at least one shot as of Saturday, CDC data showed.

China says no strings attached to Covid-19 vaccine shipments overseas

China said Saturday that it provides vaccines to other countries with no political conditions attached, responding to a story by The Associated Press saying China pressured Ukraine into withdrawing from a multi-country statement on human rights in China's Xinjiang region by threatening to withhold a COVID-19 vaccine shipment.

Britain reports highest daily Covid-19 cases since February

Britain has reported another 18,270 coronavirus cases in the latest 24-hour period, the highest since early February, according to official figures released on Saturday. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 4,717,811, the Xinhua news agency reported.
 
The country also recorded another 23 coronavirus-related deaths, bringing the national death toll to 128,089. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test. More than 44 million people in Britain have received the first Covid-19 vaccine jab and more than 32.2 million people have received two doses, the latest figures also showed.
