France records 20,177 new Covid-19 cases

France on Saturday reported 20,177 new COVID-19 cases, bringing its accumulative tally to 2,767,312, according to the country's health authorities. The COVID-19 death toll in the country rose by 168 in the past day to 67,599, the third-highest in Europe after Britain and Italy, and the seventh in the world, showed data posted on the government's website on epidemic indicators. As of Saturday, a total of 24,273 COVID-19 patients remain hospitalized, down by 137 from the previous day, while 2,609 patients are in intensive care, 6 fewer than Friday's figure.

UK records over 3 million Covid-19 cases

The United Kingdom on Saturday became the first country in Western Europe to register over 3 million Covid-19 cases, according to government data published on Saturday. The UK recorded 59,937 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections since the start of the pandemic to 3,017,409, reported CNN. The country also crossed 80,000 coronavirus-related deaths, with 1,035 new deaths added to the total in the past 24 hours. The total number of deaths stands at 80,868. Deaths are up 51.3 per cent from the week before, the seven-day average published on Saturday shows, while the number of people testing positive is up 22.1 per cent, reported CNN.

Russia logs 23,309 new Covid-19 cases

Russia recorded 23,309 more Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours, slightly down from 23,652 a day earlier, the country's Covid-19 response center said. The national tally of Covid-19 cases has increased to 3,379,103, including 61,381 deaths and 2,754,809 recoveries, the center said on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported. Moscow, Russia's worst-hit region, reported 4,900 new cases over the past day, taking the city's total caseload to 853,352. Over 93.2 million Covid-19 tests have been conducted across the country.

Pope Francis likely to get vaccinated against COVID-19 next week

Pope Francis has said that the Vatican will initiate Covid-19 vaccinations from next week and that he is in line to receive a vaccine dose. The pontiff made the comments during an interview with a channel in Italy set to air on Sunday night, reported CNN. "It is an ethical duty to take the vaccine, here in the Vatican we will start next week, I am also in line to take it," he said, according to a news anchor for the channel in a preview of the interview, which was released Saturday.

Israel reports record high of Covid-19 patients in serious condition

The number of Covid-19 patients in serious condition in Israel increased from 920 to 964, out of 1,646 hospitalised patients, the state's ministry of Health said. The latest figure released on Saturday marked a new record of patients in serious condition since the pandemic outbreak in the country in late February, Xinhua news agency reported. The number of ventilated patients reached a peak of 236, compared to the previous record of 226 reported in Israel on October 19.

Chile reports record number of daily Covid-19 cases since June with 4,361 new infections

The Chilean Ministry of Health reported on Saturday that 4,361 new cases of COVID-19 were registered in the last 24 hours, the highest daily number since the peak of infection in late June. "We are maintaining an increase in cases which worries us greatly and keeps us very attentive to two important things: the overload (of cases) that health services is receiving or will receive in a few days, and the situation of the ICU beds, which could be occupied in a few more days," Chilean Health Minister Enrique Paris told local media. Chilean Undersecretary of Assistance Networks Alberto Dougnac said that the increase in cases has translated into an increase in the demand for beds in the country's intensive care units.

Chhattisgarh coronavirus update: 1,014 cases, 15 deaths, 710 recoveries

Chhattisgarh on Saturday reported 1,014 COVID-19 cases and 15 deaths, taking the infection count to 2,88,570 and the toll to 3,484, a health official said.
 
The number of recoveries reached 2,75,812 after 97 people were discharged from hospitals and 613 completed home isolation, leaving the state with 9,274 active cases, he added.
 
"Raipur district accounted for 180 of the new cases, taking its total count to 54,232, including 739 deaths. Durg recorded 118 new cases, Bilaspur 112 and Rajnandgaon 80. Of the 15 fatalities recorded during the day, eight took place on Saturday, six on Friday and one earlier," he said.
 
With 28,917 samples tested on Saturday, the total number of tests in the state went up to 37,54,107, he added.

Coronavirus claims four more lives in Rajasthan, 430 people infects

The Covid-19 disease four more lives and infected 430 more people in Rajasthan in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll due to it to 2,731 and infection tally to 31,2521 respectively on Saturday.
 
The deaths were reported from Nagaur, Jodhpur, Jaipur and Bikaner (one each) while the maximum of positive cases (77) was reported from Jaipur, according to an official report.
 
A total of 3,03,060 Covid-19 patients have recovered so far while 6,730 people are recuperating from the disease, the report revealed.

675 new coronavirus cases in Gujarat, five deaths

Gujarat reported 675 new coronavirus positivecases on Saturday, increasing the tally of cases in the state to 2,51,273, state health department said. With five deaths, the COVID-19 fatality count in the state rose to 4,340, it said. As many as 851 patients were discharged, taking the total of recovered persons in the state to 2,38,965, the department said in its release.


With this, the state's recoveryrate went up to 95.10 per cent. As many as 47,506 tests were conducted for the virus on Saturday, increasing the total number of samples tested so far to 1,01,01,064. There are now 7,968 active cases in the state, out of which 59 patients are in critical condition,said the department. Gujarat COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 2,51,273, new cases 675, death toll 4,340, active cases 7,968, and people tested so far 1,01,01,064.

Centre must distribute coronavirus vaccine for free: Bhupesh Baghel

The Chhattisgarh government is ready to roll out Covid-19 vaccination in the state by following all guidelines and protocols laid down by the Centre, said state's Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Saturday, adding the Union government should distribute the vaccine free of cost. "Government of India must distribute the COovid-19 vaccine for free across the nation," demanded Baghel.


Speaking to media, the Chhattisgarh CM said, "We did not close down our industries and mines during the lockdown. These institutions were working with just 60 to 70 per cent of the workforce." Baghel said this increased the income of the state during the pandemic.


Regarding the ongoing protests by the farmers over newly enacted farm laws, he said: "The central government have understood that the new farm laws are not beneficial to the farmers, but are being hesitant to revoke the laws. This is why they asked the agitating farmers to go to Supreme Court." The Chhattisgarh CM is on his three-day visit to the Bastar division of the state.

Kerala reports 5,528 new cases, caseload over 806,000

Kerala's Covid-19 caseload soared to over 8.06 lakh on Saturday with 5,528 new cases being reported, while 5,424 people have recuperated from the disease. he toll has gone up to 3,279 with 22 more recent deaths being confirmed due to the virus. So far, 7,38,808 persons have recovered, while the active cases stood at 64,318.


The Covid tally now is 8,06,603. As many as 2,02,171 people are under observation in various districts, including 11,055 in various hospitals. In the last 24 hours, 61,239 samples have been tested and the test positivity rate has touched 9.03 per cent, Health minister K K Shailaja said in a press release. So far, 84,06,202 samples have been sent for testing. No UK returnees have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

Covid-19 tally of UP's Muzaffarnagar rises to 8,273 with 23 fresh cases

The Covid-19 tally of Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district surged to 8,273 on Saturday with 23 fresh cases while the death toll climbed to 106 as one more person succumbed to the disease, officials said. The latest fatality was an 83-year-old man from Bhopa village. The man, who was admitted to Muzaffarnagar Medical College and Hospital on January 5, died on Saturday, they said.
 
 
The number of active Covid-19 cases in the district stands at 270, down from 275 on Friday, according to the officials. District Magistrate Selva Kumari J said COVID-19 test results for 560 samples were received on Saturday. Of these, 23 came back positive. Two staff members of Muzaffarnagar Medical College and Hospital are among those who tested positive. With the fresh cases, the district's caseload stands at 8,273, she said. Twenty-seven people also recovered, taking the total number of recoveries in the district to 7,897, she said.

Probable cause of death was due to cardiorespiratory failure: Biotech on death in phase 3 trial

The volunteer passed away nine days after the dosing and preliminary reviews by the site indicate that the death is unrelated to the study dosing. We cannot confirm if the volunteer received the study vaccine or a placebo as the study is blinded, said Bharat Biotech. The company further said that as per post-mortem report by Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal that the site received from Bhopal Police, the probable cause of death was due to cardiorespiratory failure as a result of suspected poisoning and the case is under police investigation as well.
