WHO chief asks China to cooperate with probe into origins of Covid-19

World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Ghebreyesus has called on China to cooperate with the ongoing investigation into the origins of the COVID-19 amid renewed call to further probe the virus.
 
Dr Tedros made these remarks after taking part in the Group of Seven (G7) summit by video conference on Saturday, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported. The WHO Director-General hoped there would be better cooperation and transparency when the next phase of the probe into the virus's origin is underway.
 
"As you know we will need cooperation from the Chinese side," he said. "We need transparency to understand or know or find the origin of this virus...after the report was released there were difficulties in the data sharing, especially in the raw data."

Andaman and Nicobar Islands report 10 new Covid cases

Andaman and Nicobar Islands COVID-19 tally rose to 7,243 as 10 more people tested positive for the virus, while one new fatality pushed the coronavirus death toll in the union territory to 126, a health official said on Sunday.
 
All the 10 new cases in the archipelago were detected during contact tracing.
 
The union territory now has 121 active COVID-19 cases, of which 117 are in South Andaman district while the rest four in North and Middle Andaman district, the official said, adding that the Nicobar district is now coronavirus free as it has no active COVID-19 case. Andaman and Nicobar Islands have three districts.

Ladakh records 38 new Covid positive cases

Ladakh has recorded 38 fresh COVID-19 cases taking the overall tally to 19,544, while the active cases in the region dropped to 746 after 88 more patients recovered from the disease, officials said on Sunday.
 
Ladakh has registered 197 coronavirus related deaths since last year with the worst-hit Leh accounting for 143 fatalities followed by 54 in Kargil district.
 
Of the new cases, 32 persons tested positive in Leh taking the infection tally in the district to 16,145, while six cases were detected in Kargil pushing the district tally of infections to 3,399, the officials said.
 
They said the number of cured patients has risen to 18,601 after the recovery of 72 patients in Leh and 16 in Kargil. With this the active cases have come down to 756 with 613 in Leh and 133 in Kargil, the officials said.

Private hospitals used only 17.05% of total Covid vaccines in May

In a shocking revelation at a time when there is vaccine shortage in the country, only 17.05 per cent of the total vaccines received from the Centre were used by the private hospitals in May, says government data.
 
As per the Health Ministry's June 4 data, the Central government provided total of 7.4 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses to hospitals across the country in May, of which 1.85 crore doses were earmarked for private hospitals.
 
Of the 1.85 crore vaccines earmarked for private hospitals across India, 1.29 crore doses were provided to them in May, however, the government data showed, only 22 lakh doses were used. READ MORE...

Arunachal Pradesh reports 298 new Covid cases, five more deaths

Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday reported 298 new COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to 31,148, a Health Department official said. Five more persons died of COVID-19 in the state, pushing the toll to 143.
 
The new deaths were reported from Changlang, Tawang, Capital Complex Region, Lower Siang and Lower Subansiri, State Surveillance officer Dr Lobsang Jampa said. The Capital Complex Region recorded the highest number of fresh cases at 55, followed by Upper Subansiri (39), West Kameng (29) and Papumpare (27).

Not enough data to say children will be more affected in third wave: Report

There appears to be no substantial evidence to suggest that children will be more affected or have greater illness severity due to Covid-19 in the anticipated third wave, according to a new report.
 
The Lancet Covid-19 Commission India Task Force prepared the report after convening an experts group comprising leading paediatricians from the country to examine the issue of paediatric Covid-19' in India.

Africa Covid caseload tops 5 million-mark

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Africa has reached 5,011,502, according to health authorities. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said on Saturday that the death toll from the pandemic stands at 134,239, while 4,504,296 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease, reports Xinhua news agency.
 
South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Egypt are the countries with the most cases in the continent, according to the Africa CDC.
 
South Africa has recorded the highest number of Covid-19 cases at 1,730,106, followed by Morocco with 523,165. In terms of the caseload, southern Africa is the most affected region, followed by the northern and eastern parts of the continent, while central Africa is the least affected.
