Telangana logs 7,994 new coronavirus infection cases, 58 deaths in a day

Telangana reported7,994 fresh Covid-19 casestaking the tally to over 4.27 lakh while the toll stood at 2,208 with 58 more casualties, the state government said on Thursday.
 
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 1,630, followed by Medchal Malkajgiri (615) and Rangareddy (558), it said in a bulletin, providing details as of 8 PM on April 28.
 
The total number of cumulative cases in the state stood at 4,27,960 while with 4,009 patients being cured, the total recoveries were at 3,49,692. Read on...

Holding Kumbh mela amid Covid-19 pandemic made Uttarakhand a laughing stock: High Court

The Uttarakhand high court on Wednesday took to task the state government over the Covid-19 situation, saying that the state has become a laughing stock due to its organising the Kumbh Mela in the midst of a raging pandemic.
 
The remarks came in the form of an oral observation from the bench of Chief Justice RS Chauhan and Justice Alok Kumar Verma while it was hearing a bunch of PILs about the state's handling of the Covid-19 situation.
 
The judges also questioned the decision of going ahead with the Char Dham Yatra which is slated to begin from next month onwards, saying that the prospect of conducting the pilgrimage in these times is “a frightening one”.

Brazil begins to make own Covid-19 vaccine

Brazil's Sao Paulo-based Butantan Institute, a state-run medical research facility, on Wednesday began to manufacture ButanVac, the first Brazilian vaccine against the novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19), state governor Joao Doria announced.
 
"It will be the first vaccine manufactured entirely in Brazil, without the need to import raw materials," Doria said during a press conference at the institute, which is funded by the state government.
 
Production began on the first of an expected 18 million doses by mid-July, though Brazil's Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) has yet to authorise the vaccine, the Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday.

US tells citizens to leave India as Covid-19 overwhelms hospitals

The U.S. government told its citizens to leave India as soon as possible because of the country’s escalating Covid-19 crisis.
 
In a Level 4 travel advisory --- the highest issued by the Department of State -- U.S. citizens were told “not to travel to India or to leave as soon as it is safe to do so.” There are 14 direct daily flights between India and the U.S. and other services that connect through Europe, the department said.
 
Indian authorities and hospitals are struggling to cope with record Covid-19 infections and deaths. Official data on Wednesday showed new infections rose by 360,960 in the prior 24 hours, while 3,293 additional lives were lost -- both a record for the country. WB polls: TMC leader dies of Covid-19, wife files complaint against EC

The widow of Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Khardaha Kajal Sinha, who died of Covid-19 on April 25, has filed a complaint against the Election Commission.
 
Sinha's wife, Nandita, has accused Deputy Election Commissioner Sudeep Jain along with other officials of the poll panel of not ensuring the "safety of candidates or general public during the ongoing pandemic".
