PM Modi to address nation at 5pm as India battles Covid-19

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 5pm today, said his office on Twitter as India recovers from a devastating second wave of Covid-19 cases.
 
Modi’s office did not say what Modi would speak about but when the pandemic broke out last year he used his televised speeches to announce a nationwide lockdown and to request people to follow safety norms for Covid-19. India reported on Monday a daily rise in new coronavirus infections of 100,636 cases over the past 24 hours, while deaths rose by 2,427.
 
The total cases were the lowest in two months. The nation's tally of infections now stands at 28.9 million, while the death toll has reached 349,186, health ministry data showed. READ MORE...

People above 45 yrs will be given vaccines at polling booths: Delhi CM

Polling booths in Delhi will be turned into vaccination centres and booth-level officers (BLOs) will visit all the households to book slots for people in the 45 plus age group under the 'Jahan Vote, Wahan Vaccination campaign, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Monday.
 
There are 57 lakh people in Delhi in the 45 plus age group and of them, 27 lakh have been given the first dose of the vaccine while 30 lakh are yet to get the jab, Kejriwal said in an online briefing.
 
"We have noticed that people in the 45 plus age group are not coming to vaccination centres set up by the Delhi government and vaccines are not being utilised," he said. READ MORE...

Covid lockdown extended for another week in Uttarakhand

The Covid lockdown in Uttarakhand has been extended for another week till June 15 with some relaxations. The period of current lockdown in the state was scheduled to come to an end at 6 am on Tuesday morning.
 
Extended for another week, the curfew would remain in force till 6 am on June 15, Chief Secretary Om Prakash had said in an order on Sunday.
 
The order authorises district magistrates to give relaxations in rural areas under their jurisdiction based on their assessment of the Covid situation. However, people will be allowed to go to vaccination centres to get vaccine jabs during the lockdown if they have the document to prove their purpose. Only 20 people with negative RT-PCR test reports not older than 72 hours can attend weddings, the order said.

Over 100,000 coronavirus cases in India, lowest spike since April 5

India on Monday logged 1,00,636 new Covid infections in 24 hours, 13,824 cases less than Sunday. This is also the lowest spike since April 5 when the country saw a rise of 96,982 cases in a day. During the same time span, 2,427 more people succumbed to the pandemic, the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry said.
 
On Sunday (June 6), India had reported 1,14,460 cases, lowest spike since April 6.

Karnataka coronavirus update: 12,209 Covid infections, 320 deaths reported

Karnataka reported 12,209 new coronavirus cases, 320 deaths and 25,659 discharges in the last 24 hours, according to the state's department of health and family welfare on Sunday.
 
With this, the cumulative caseload reached 26,95,523 including 2,54,505 active infections, 24,09,417 discharges and 31,580 deaths.
 
A positivity rate of 7 per cent and a case fatality rate of 2.62 per cent was recorded in the 24-hour period.

Uttar Pradesh administers over 20 million coronavirus vaccine doses

Uttar Pradesh governenment has administered more than 20 million doses of vaccine against the coronavirus so far. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed officials to increase the vaccination capacity by taking it to 1 million doses per day in July.
 
"Till now we have administered more than 20 million (2,02,34,598) doses of vaccine against the coronavirus. In view of the huge population of Uttar Pradesh, we have to speed up the Covid-19 vaccination. We must now work upon expanding the 'Mission June' target by three times in July", said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath while addressing a high-level Covid review meeting. Read on...

Blinken calls on China to cooperate in 'getting to bottom' of Covid origins

The United States needs to delve deeper into the origins of Covid-19 and hold China accountable, said Secretary of State Antony Blinken in an interview aired on Sunday amid calls for a fresh probe into the origins of the virus.
 
"The most important reason we have to get to the bottom of this is that's the only way we're going to be able to prevent the next pandemic or at least do a better job in mitigating it," Blinken said in an interview with Axios which was aired on HBO.
 
Amid criticism surrounding the inconclusive international probe into the virus' origins, Blinken said that the Joe Biden administration is determined to "get to the bottom" of the origins of the novel coronavirus.
