Brazil near 100,000 deaths from Covid-19

Brazil was leaping toward a grim milestone 100,000 deaths from Covid-19 on Saturday, and five months after the first reported case, the country had not shown signs of crushing the disease.
 
Brazil, a nation of 210 million people, has been reporting an average of more than 1,000 daily deaths from the pandemic since late May.
 
The Health Ministry on Friday said there had been a total of 2,962,442 confirmed infections with the new coronavirus and 99,572 deaths tolls second only to the United States.

Uttarakhand sees highest single-day surge of 501 Covid-19 cases

Uttarakhand on Saturday recorded the highest single-day spike of 501 new Covid-19 cases taking the state's tally to 9,402 while the pandemic's toll rose to 117 with the death of five patients.
 
Haridwar district accounted for the highest number of 172 cases followed by Udham Singh Nagar district which reported 171 cases, a state health department bulletin said.
 
Nainital reported 85 cases, Dehradun 38, Bageshwar 10, Pauri 9, Uttarkashi 5, Tehri 4, Pithoragarh 3, Rudraprayag 2, Chamoli 1 and Champawat 1, it said.

2,639 new coronavirus cases in Pune district

Pune district reported 2,639 new coronavirus cases since previous evening, taking its case count to 1,05,523 on Saturday, a health official said here.
 
The death toll due to the pandemic, on the other hand, reached 2,414 with 70 patients dying in the district since Friday evening, he said.
 
1,290 new cases were found in the Pune Municipal Corporation limits, which has recorded 64,576 cases so far. At the same time, 1,961 patients were discharged from the hospitals, the official said.

Andaman-Nicobar reports 99 new Covid cases; virus enters unaffected island

The number of Covid-19 cases in Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 1,222 after 99 fresh infections were registered in the last 24 hours in the archipelago, officials said on Saturday.
 
Seventy patients also recovered from the disease during the period.
 
The union territory now has 778 active cases, while 425 have been cured of coronavirus infection so far and 19 died.
 
Meanwhile, coronavirus entered Nicobar district, comprising 22 islands including 12 uninhabited ones, as seven government employees were infected with it, they said.

UP govt proved to be failure in dealing with Covid-19: Akhilesh Yadav

The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has proved to be a "failure" in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic and patients were neither getting medicines nor proper treatment, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav alleged on Saturday.
 
The state has so far recorded 1,18,038 Covid-19 cases and 2,028 deaths due to the disease. At present, there are 46,177 active cases and 69,833 people have been discharged from hospitals after recovery.
 
Hitting out at the Yogi Adityanath dispensation, Yadav, in a press statement, claimed that it has proved "incapable and helpless" in dealing with the coronavirus.
 
"As the situation is going out of control, a 'no test-no case' strategy has been adopted in the state," he said.

13 districts with 14% Covid deaths to advance ICU beds, oxygen stocks

The Union Health Ministry on Saturday directed 13 districts including Delhi, which reported 14 per cent of the Covid-19 death toll, to advance the preparedness for critical clinical infrastructure in their hospitals.
 

These districts, which also account for nine per cent of the total active cases, were asked to ensure availability of ICU beds, oxygen supply etc. after assessment of the current caseload and the estimated growth rate.
 

The directions came in a meeting held between top officials of the health ministry and district officers of the thirteen districts.

Goa: 259 new Covid-19 cases, 2 deaths; count 8,206, toll 72

The number of COVID-19 cases in Goa increased by 259 on Saturday to reach 8,206, while two deaths took the toll to 72, an official said.
 

A total of 207 people were discharged during the day, taking the number of such cases to 5,802, leaving the state with 2,332 active cases, he said.
 

"A 74-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man died. On Saturday, 3,626 samples were tested, of which 259 were positive, 2,059 negative and reports of 1308 are awaited," he informed.

Punjab's Covid-19 tally nears 23k mark, death toll rises to 562

Punjab on Saturday reported 23 more fatalities due to COVID-19, pushing the toll to 562, while 998 fresh cases took the state's infection tally to 22,928.
 

Twelve deaths were reported in Ludhiana, three in Patiala, two in Amritsar and one each in Barnala, Jalandhar, Mohali, SBS Nagar, Rupnagar and Sangrur, according to a medical bulletin.

Among districts which reported the fresh cases are Ludhiana (168), Patiala (139), Jalandhar (120), Amritsar (102), Mohali (91), Bathinda (72) Gurdaspur (50) and Sangrur (32).
