Puducherry logs 92 fresh Covid-19 cases, overall tally rises to 1,23,802

The union territory of Puducherry logged 92 new coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours taking the overall tally to 1,23,802, a senior official of the Department of Health said on Thursday, PTI reported.

Two more patients- one each from Karaikal and Mahe- succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours ending 10 AM Thursday taking the death toll to 1,815, Director of the Health Department G Sriramulu said in a release.

The 92 fresh cases were identified at the end of the examination of 5,195 samples and they were spread over Puducherry (43), Karaikal and Mahe (23 cases each) while the Yanam region registered three new infections.

Kerala to set up panel to study practicality of reopening schools

Despite concerns about increasing COVID-19 cases, the Kerala government is mulling to reopen schools as it has decided to set up an expert panel to study the present circumstances in the state and submit a report in this regard, PTI reported.

General Education Minister V Sivankutty said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the high level committee monitoring the COVID situation and guiding actions to deal with the disease in the state would take a final decision on the school reopening.

"The Education Department is contemplating to set up a suitable expert panel to submit a report to know whether the circumstances in the state are all right to reopen the schools," he told reporters here.

Over 646.5 million Covid vaccine doses provided to states, UTs so far: Govt

More than 64.65 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses have been provided to states and union territories so far by the Centre for free and under the direct state procurement category, the Union health ministry said on Thursday, PTI reported.

As many as 4,78,94,030 unutilised vaccine doses are still available with the states and UTs to be administered, it said.

The Union government is committed to accelerating the pace and expanding the scope of COVID-19 vaccination throughout the country, the ministry said in a statement.

Passengers from Brazil, South Africa can leave K'taka airports only if they test negative for Covid-19

The Karnataka government has made RT-PCR test mandatory for passengers from select countries arriving at airports in the State even if they possess a negative COVID-19 report, PTI reported.

However, those coming from Brazil and South Africa will have to wait at the airport for test results and be allowed to leave only after testing negative.

Covid-19 long-haulers at risk of developing kidney disease

Researchers have pointed to a significant decline in kidney function in Covid-19 long-haulers and even among those who had mild infections of the virus, IANS reported.

The study, by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, showed that people infected with SARS-CoV-2 are at an increased likelihood of developing kidney damage as well as chronic and end-stage kidney diseases.

The study is published online in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

Abu Dhabi will remove the need to quarantine for all vaccinated travellers arriving from international destinations starting Sunday, said the Abu Dhabi government media office on Twitter on Thursday.
 
A negative PCR test remains a requirement to travel to the United Arab Emirates' capital, it said.

Australia reports record new Covid amid raging 3rd wave

Australia has reported another record number of 1,477 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday as the country continued to battle the raging third wave of the infections, IANS reported.

The new cases took the overall infection tally to 56,212, while the death toll stood at 1,012, reports Xinhua news agency.

It came as Australia surpassed 20 million coronavirus vaccine doses administered in a major milestone for the rollout.

Odisha records 754 new cases

Odisha recorded 754 new cases of Covid-19 and six deaths from the disease in 24 hours, PTI reported quoting an unnamed civil servant. The state has 10,09,223 cases of Covid-19 and 8,028 have died of the disease yet.
