Flights to and from the Bhubaneswar airport have been cancelled for May 3 (Friday) as 'extremely severe' cyclonic storm Fani heads towards Odisha and the east coast, even as Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu Thursday requested airlines to offer assistance in rescue and relief operations.

Odisha govt to evacuate 1.15 million people to safer zones
Odisha is moving 1.15 million people from the impact zone of cyclonic storm Fani making it the largest ever evacuation operation in the country
By this evening, the state had moved about 800,000 people to safer locations from the vulnerable pockets as cyclone Fani moved at a quicker pace towards the Puri coast for landfall on Friday morning likely between 8 am and 10 am.

Massive evacuation on in Odisha as cyclone 'Fani' rolls
A massive exodus was under way in coastal Odisha as hundreds of thousands of people left their home and hearth, on foot and by vehicles, to escape the fury of cyclone 'Fani' in probably the largest evacuation ahead of a natural disaster in the country.
Fani is the most severe cyclonic storm since the super cyclone of 1999 that claimed close to 10,000 lives and left a trail of destruction in vast swathes of the state, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JWTC).

After Paradip, now Gopalpur port also suspends operations
Ahead of the impending very severe cyclonic storm, Fani, the port at Gopalpur off the South Odisha coast, has suspended all operations.
After Paradip suspended operations earlier, Gopalpur Ports Ltd has become the second port top do so. Paradip, next only to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Port (formerly Kandla) by cargo volumes, had on Tuesday evening announced a temporary halt in operations to ward off any impact from the tropical cyclonic storm to pound Puri's coast in the forenoon of May 3. All cargo loading and unloading operations stand suspended. The loss assessment is yet to be done by the Paradip Port Trust (PPT) authorities.

NASA satellites track Fani along Eastern India's coastline
NASA's satellites Aqua and Terra tracked Tropical Cyclone Fani as it continued to move northward along the eastern coast of India. The satellites have been providing infrared, microwave and visible imagery of Fani. Read more
