Cyclone Nisarga LIVE: NDRF teams begin restoration work in cyclone-hit Ratnagiri in Maharashtra
After cyclone Nisarga made landfall in Ratnagiri yesterday, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel on Thursday conducted restoration work at Mandangad area of the district.
The NDRF team was seen removing tress which got uprooted by the strong winds caused by the cyclone and had fallen on roads, causing traffic jams.
A total of 43 NDRF teams were deployed in the wake of the cyclone, including 21 in Maharashtra and 16 in Gujarat. Around 40,000 people were evacuated each from both the states, along with several from Daman and Diu.
Cyclone Nisarga is now a depression over west Vidarbha region and will weaken further, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted on Thursday.

LIVE: Sonu Sood offers help to 28,000 underprivileged people affected by Cyclone Nisarga
Actor Sonu Sood on Thursday said he and his team provided food and rehabilitation to 28,000 people living close to the coastal lines when Cyclone Nisarga made its way to Mumbai. The cyclone spared India's financial capital, which is already reeling under the COVID-19 pandemic, after it made landfall near adjoining Alibaug on Wednesday.
Sood, who has been arranging transport facilities for migrant workers to return to their home safely amid the pandemic, said they have moved the people to municipality schools and colleges for safety.
Today, all of us are facing tough times and the best way to fight this is by being each other's strongest support system. My team and I have distributed food to over 28,000 people from the coastal areas across Mumbai and rehabilitated them in various schools and colleges. We are making sure all of them are safe, Sood said in a statement.

Cyclone Nisarga LIVE: Central team to survey Bengal districts ravaged by Cyclone
An inter-ministerial central team (IMCT) will arrive in West Bengal on Thursday evening to survey the districts ravaged by Cyclone Amphan, a senior state government official said. Headed by Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary (Cyber and Information Security), Anuj Sharma, the seven-member team will survey the two worst-affected districts of North and South 24 Parganas to assess the devastation, he said.
"The team members will be divided into two groups to conduct the survey on Friday. They may conduct an aerial survey or do a ground assessment. But since they have only a day for the purpose, they may take the aerial route," the IAS official said on Thursday.
As per the schedule, IMCT members will survey Patharpratima and Namkhana in South 24 Parganas districts and Hingalganj and Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district, he said.

Cyclone Nisarga LIVE: Restoration work begins in Maharashtra's Raigad district
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities in Maharashtra's Raigad district have started restoration work in the region that bore the brunt of cyclonic storm 'Nisarga', an official said on Thursday. The cyclone made landfall near Shrivardhan in the district on Wednesday afternoon and lashed the coastal areas of Alibaug, Revdanda, Revas, Murud, Mhasala and Roha with strong winds and haeavy rains.
Several kutcha houses, temporary shades were destroyed, trees and electrical poles were uprooted and roofs of some structures were blown away by the storm, the official said. Once the storm abated on Wednesday evening, personnel from the NDRF and district administration assessed the damages and began restoration activities, he said.
NDRF teams helped people repair their homes in Alibaug, Revdanda and other tehsils, which were severely hit, he said.

LIVE: Inter Ministerial Central Team to reach Bengal today to assess damage caused by Cyclone Amphan
The Home Ministry has formed an Inter Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) to visit West Bengal for assessment of the damage caused by cyclone 'Amphan'. The state has classified them as "state guests" during their visit. The team will have seven members headed by Joint Secretary, MHA Anuj Sharma.
Other officers are from Ministry of Jal Shakti, Power Ministry, Road and Highways, Department of Fisheries. The team will arrive today and will visit South and North 24 Parganas during its two days visit.
Meanwhile, a five-member IMCT which will assess the damage caused due to Cyclone Amphan in Odisha reached Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. Amphan made landfall in the coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal on May 20 and left a trail of devastation in its wake.

Cyclone Nisarga claims 4 lives in Maharashtra and then fizzles out
Barely 18 hours after hitting Maharashtra, the Cyclone Nisarga -- which claimed 4 lives -- fizzled out into a depression and was headed towards the Vidarbha region in the east, officials said here on Thursday.
"The deep depression weakened into a depression over west Vidarbha at 0530 (4th June), to move east-northeastwards and weaken into a well marked low pressure area by today evening," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its latest bulletin.
The cyclone, which made its landfall at Shriwardhan-Dive Agar in Raigad district, later diverted towards Pune and by Thursday morning was headed east from the Nashik region to the Vidarbha region.
Both Raigad and Pune have reported two cyclone-related deaths till now, besides at least 10 injuries.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said the resilience showed by people and officials helped in "mitigating the intensity" of the cyclone 'Nisarga' which had hovered over the state amidst the Covid-19 crisis.
After hitting the Maharashtra coast near Alibaug with wind speeds of up to 120 kmph in afternoon, the cyclone weakened into intensity in the evening and moved towards north-east Maharashtra, sparing Mumbai and other areas.

Worst over; NDRF teams to stay deployed in Cyclone Nisarga-affected areas: DG
Cyclone Nisarga, which slammed the Maharashtra coast with wind speeds of up to 120 kmph, caused minimal damage to life and property and the "worst is over", the NDRF chief said on Wednesday evening.
However, NDRF teams will remain deployed and assist state authorities in recovery work, said S N Pradhan, the chief of the federal contingency force, in a video message.
"Whatever damage has happened has been generally limited to Raigad district and its talukas," he said, adding the "worst is over".
