Cyclone Nisarga made landfall in Raigad district, south of Mumbai, with wind speeds of up to 120 kmph on Wednesday, after thousands of people were evacuated in Mumbai, coastal Maharashtra and south Gujarat.
Flight operations at the Mumbai airport were suspended till 7 pm. Already down on its knees from the raging COVID-19 pandemic, Mumbai was facing a cyclone for the first time in 72 years, Adam Soebel, a professor of atmospheric science at Columbia University in New York, tweeted.
Trees and electricity polls were uprooted in Maharashtra's Raigad district as Nisarga blew in from the Arabian Sea, making landfall at the coastal town Alibaug at around 12.30 pm.

Mumbai looked set to escape the fury of Cyclone Nisarga which made a thumping wet landfall at Shriwardhan-Dive Agar in Maharashtra's Raigad on Wedesday afternoon, officials indicated. As per the latest India Meteorological Department bulletin, the cyclone which was expected to move towards Mumbai-Thane-Palghar, has apparently veered off to the east and moving towards Pune.
"Nisarga lay centred over coastal Maharashtra, close to east-southeast of Alibaug, 75 kms south-east of Mumbai (Colaba) and 65 kms west of Pune. Current intensity (near center) 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph," said the IMD.
From the changed direction, the cyclone is likely to head towards Nashik, Jalgaon and then onto Madhya Pradesh, officials said, even as Nisarga seemed to have missed the state capital by a whisker.

BSE, NSE ready to access carry out operations from DR site amid cyclone threat
To avoid any service disruption as a result of the cyclonic storm, BSE and National Stock Exchange will carry out operations from disaster recovery (DR) site, if required, the two leading exchanges said on Wednesday.
In such a scenario, market participants willbe intimated appropriately, the exchanges said in separate circulars. This comes following a warning issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD) with regard to cyclonic storm "Nisarga", which hit Maharashtra on Wednesday.
Further, trading members have beenadvised to ensure access to their primary and/or DR site to ensure smooth functioning of their operations related to trading, clearing and settlement.

Cyclone Nisarga LIVE: Rains cause water-logging in Pune
Several low-lying areas in Maharashtra's Pune remained inundated due to rains brought in by cyclone 'Nisarga' since Tuesday night, officials said on Wednesday.
Incidents of trees falling due to gusty winds have also been reported at some places in the city. The cyclone made landfall in coastal Raigad district, several kilometres away from here, on Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, the IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in ghat areas in and around Pune district with squally and gutsy winds.

LIVE: Mumbai Congress sets up control room in view of 'Nisarga' cyclone
The Mumbai unit of the Congress has set up a "control room" to assist people in view of the threat posed by the severe cyclonic storm 'Nisarga' that made landfall in Raigad on Wednesday. The Maharashtra Congress gave this information on its official Twitter handle.
"The Congress is always ready to help you," said the party on the micro-blogging site.
It also shared the contact numbers of its key leaders from Mumbai, including Maharashtra ministers Varsha Gaikwad and Aslam Shaikh, Mumbai wing chief Eknath Gaikwad and party leaders from the city including Ravi Raja and others.

LIVE: Cyclone Nisarga did not land in Karnataka
Cyclone Nisarga did not land in Karnataka and has passed its border with heavy rains and strong winds, said an official on Wednesday. There was no report of any casualty, the official added.
"It has already passed. We have not got any reports of fatalities. A heavy rain was expected and the deputy commissioners were alerted. Fishermen too were warned," said Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) Principal Secretary T.K. Anil Kumar. Kumar said Nisarga's actual landing is in Maharashtra and the warning was given for that state and Gujarat.
"In the fringe proportion (of Karnataka), high winds were expected and fishermen were warned not to venture into the sea," he said.
Kumar said the department interacted with the deputy commissioners of Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga and alerted them about heavy rains.

LIVE: Mumbai airport suspends operations till 7 pm as Cyclone Nisarga makes landfall
Flight operations at the Mumbai airport will remain shut till 7 pm on Wednesday as a preventive step due to the ongoing landfall of Cyclone Nisarga, Mumbai International Ltd (MIAL) said.
"Considering the strong crosswinds, it has been decided that no arrivals and departures will take place between 2.30 pm and 7 pm," MIAL said in a statement.
It said that the decision to temporarily suspend flight services at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) was taken in consultation with the Airport Authority of India (AAI). The majority 74 per cent stake is with a GVK group-led consortium. The private airport operator had scheduled a total of 19 flights for Wednesday, which included 11 departures and eight arrivals to be operated by five airlines -- Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, GoAir and AirAsia India.

LIVE: Cyclone Nisarga shows signs of weakening
After storming the Maharashtra coast with wind speeds of up to 120 kmph on Wednesday afternoon, Cyclone Nisarga has started weakening and its intensity will reduce further by evening, the India Meteorological Department said.
The landfall of the cyclone began at 12.30 PM at Alibaug and the process was completed by 2.30 PM, IMD director general Mrutunjay Mohapatra said. The storm lay 75 kilometres southeast of Mumbai and 65 kilometres west of Pune.
It has started weakening. The wind speed is currently 90-100 kilometres per hour and the intensity will reduce further by evening, he said. The cyclone will further weaken into a cyclonic storm by evening and into a deep depression by late night, an IMD bulletin said.

Cyclone LIVE: No major impact in Gujarat after 'Nisarga' makes landfall in Maharashtra
No untoward incident has been reported in southern coast of Gujarat so far on Wednesday due to the severe cyclonic storm 'Nisarga', which has made landfall in neighbouring Maharashtra, a senior official said. Authorities have so far shifted more than 63,700 people living close to the coast in eight districts to safer places as a precautionary measure, he said.
The cyclone made landfall near Alibaug in coastal Raigad district of Maharashtra around 12:30 pm.
As per India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar in Maharashtra will feel the impact of gusty winds and heavy rains being caused by the storm.
