Cyclone Nisarga LIVE: Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray asks administration to ensure immediate relief

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday directed the state administration tomaintain operational readiness and ensure immediate rescue works as cyclone 'Nisarga moves from Mumbai and Thane to North Maharashtra.
 
Thackeray is in constant touch with collectors of districts on the western coast of the state for updates about the impact of Nisarga, Chief Ministers Office (CMO) said.
 
Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts have been affected by the severe cyclonic storm, which made landfall in Raigad district with a speed of 100 to 110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph.

Cyclone Nisarga LIVE: Chief Sharad Pawar urges NCP workers to help cyclone-affected people

As cyclonic storm Nisarga lashed the coast of Maharashtra on Wednesday, NCP chief Sharad Pawar urged his party workers to help people at the time of the natural disaster.
 
In a statement, Pawar noted that the cyclone has caused severe damage to public and private properties and asked NCP workers to help those affected by the phenomenon. Meanwhile, taking to Twitter, NCP MP from Baramati Supriya Sule urged people living in the coastal areas to remain indoors and abide by the state government's instructions.
 
A severe cyclonic storm, with a speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph, made a landfall at Alibaug in neighbouring Raigad district, impacting Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

Cyclone Nisarga LIVE: Vehicular movement restricted at Bandra-Worli Sea Link

The vehicular movement has been restricted on Bandra-Worli Sea Link until further notice and flights have been cancelled. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced that no arrivals and departures would take place for four and a half hours today, following a runway excursion with FedEx flight 5033, arriving from Bengaluru, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), read AAI's press statement.
 
The incident occurred when the aircraft landed on the runway. The aircraft was towed away from the runway and there was no disruption in flight operations, as per the statement.
 
The cyclone made landfall near Alibaug in Maharashtra and is expected to weaken into a cyclonic storm in the next six hours, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

LIVE: Cyclone Nisarga hits coastal Maharashtra with full fury

After a wait of 72 hours, Cyclone Nisarga made a thumping landfall at Shriwardhan-Dive Agar in Raigad district, hitting coastal Maharashtra with full fury, officials said.
 
"The eye of the storm is around 60 km away, it has hit Raigad district at a speed of over 100kmph. Now, it is proceedings towards Uran," said Ratnagiri Collector Nidhi Choudhari in a statement.
 
Uran is in the northern-part of Raigad, barely a couple of kilometres from south-central Mumbai which is dotted with towering skyscrapers and slums standing cheek-by-jowl, both at risk in the cyclone, close to the angry churning Arabian Sea. Several hours before the landfall, Nisarga had already announced its impending arrival with heavy rain in the entire coastal region of Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, accompanied by strong gales of upto 60-70 kmph since Wednesday morning.

With landfall process of Cyclone 'Nisarga' afoot and expected to continue for at least three hours hitting coastal districts of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa, National Disaster Response Force chief S.N. Pradhan on Wednesday said the evacuation work was nearly complete with 43 teams of the NDRF on the job.
 
The cyclone was moving along the predicted path announced by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the science of cyclone building up was evident in the southern district of Maharashtra, Pradhan added. In Ratnagiri -- a port town in Maharashtra -- the NDRF Director General said the waves have gone high and the winds and rain have picked up. The landfall began a little after 1 p.m. just south of Alibaug coastal town of Raigad district as was predicted.
 
Earlier Pradhan had said "The cyclone was expected to make landfall sometime in the afternoon between 2 pm and 4.30 pm." A total of 43 NDRF teams were deployed on the job and the evacuation work was complete in all respects, he stated then.

Cyclone Nisarga LIVE: Bollywood celebs ask people to stay safe, not panic

Bollywood stars Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, Madhuri Dixit and others have urged people to take precautionary measures to safeguard themselves from cyclone Nisarga, which is expected to make landfall close to the city on Wednesday. Hanging over the Arabian Sea, 190 kilometres from Mumbai, Nisarga is moving at a speed of 11 kilometres per hour and is likely to make landfall at the coastal town Alibaug between 1 pm and 4 pm, officials said.
 
Already struggling with the raging COVID-19 pandemic, Mumbai will be hit by a cyclone after a gap of 129 years, weather experts said. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a number of guidelines for the people, which includes keeping an emergency kit ready, staying away from windows, disconnecting power supply of all non-emergency equipments.

Nisarga may have passed Goa coast: CM

Cyclonic storm 'Nisarga' may have already moved away from the seas off the Goa's coastline, but government departments are on alert to take on any eventuality, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Wednesday.
 
Speaking to reporters at the state secretariat, Sawant said, that despite the passage of the cyclone off the Goa's coast, the state could continue to see heavy rainfall over the next couple of days.
 
"There will be heavy rains for two to three days. I believe it (cyclone) has passed Goa. But it is expected to rain for a couple of days," Sawant told reporters.
 
"We have alerted all departments and people, especially along the coastal areas, should be more careful to avoid untoward incident," the Chief Minister also said.
