Cyclone Nisarga LIVE: Over 40,000 living near sea coast in Mumbai evacuated
Over 40,000 people living near the sea coast in Mumbai were shifted to safer places in view of the cyclone 'Nisarga' which made a landfall at Alibaug in neighbouring Raigad district of Maharashtra on Wednesday, officials said. When the cyclone passes off, these people will be sent home after their health tests, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
"The BMC shifted 10,840 people from areas near the sea coast and landslide prone locations to 35 municipal schools where temporary accommodation facilities have been set up. They were provided food and water," the civic body said in a release.
Besides, following an appeal by the BMC, nearly 30,000 people on their own moved to these temporary accommodations, it said. The civic body also received 37 complaints of tree fall in the city, but there was no report of any injury.

LIVE: All fishing boats return to shore ahead of cyclone Nisarga
All fishing boats which were out in the sea off Palghar coast have returned ahead of the cyclone 'Nisarga', which is set to make a landfall at Alibaug in neighbouring Raigad district of Maharashtra on Wednesday afternoon, an official said.
As many as 577 fishing boats from Palghar had earlier gone out in the sea and till Monday evening, 564 came back. Later, help was sought from the Coast Guard, Navy and the fisheries department and the remaining 13 boats also returned to the shore late Tuesday evening, district disaster control chief Vivekanand Kadam said.
Till Wednesday morning, more than 15,000 people residing in low lying areas and 'kutcha' houses near the coast in Dahanu, Palghar, Vasai and Talasari tehsils of Palghar were evacuated and shifted to safer places, he said. Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have already been stationed in Palghar to meet any eventuality, another official said.

Cyclone Nisarga LIVE: Traffic on Bandra-Worli sea link suspended
Vehicular movement on iconic Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai was suspended on Wednesday in light of cyclone 'Nisarga' which began landfall near Alibaug, about 95 km from Mumbai, police said.
"In light of #CycloneNisarga, no vehicular movement is permitted on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link," tweeted Mumbai Police.
Mumbai Police are taking every precautions to avert any untoward damage due to the cyclone, it said. An alert has already been sounded in Mumbai in view of the cyclone 'Nisarga', which made landfall near Alibaug around 12:30 pm.

Cyclone Nisarga LIVE update: 10 sailors rescued off Ratnagiri coast in Maharashtra
At least 10 sailors were rescued from a ship, which was stranded off the coast of Ratnagiri in Maharashtra due to high tide and heavy rains in the wake of cyclonic storm Nisarga on Wednesday, an official said. The vessel with a crew of 10 was spotted from the Mirya Bunder area of Ratnagiri and efforts were made to bring it to the coast, the official said.
However, the high tide coupled with heavy rains and rough winds pushed the ship towards the coast of Mirakwada, where the sailors were rescued safely, he said. Heavy rains pounded Ratnagiri as Cyclone Nisarga made its landfall on Wednesday. Roofs of several buildings in Ratnagiri, including a bank in Dapoli, were blown away by the rough winds, the official added.

As Mumbai braces for cyclone Nisarga, expected to make landfall at nearby Alibaug later on Wednesday, many senior citizens recall the fury of the cyclone that hit the city in 1948.
Strong winds and rain had lashed the city incessantly, trees were uprooted in large numbers and there was extensive property damage during that cyclone, they recall. Pune-based Sucheta Nadkarny (81), who lived in Mumbai suburb Vile Parle in 1948 said, "I remember huge trees in our areawere uprooted and plants in our garden destroyed.
"I was 10 years old then and remember this becausemy motherwas heart broken as the plants she had lovingly nurtured were destroyed," Nadkarny told PTI. "On November 22 that year Mumbai, then Bombay,was completely paralysed after the fierce storm which raged for 20 hours. Intermittent rains caused floods in several parts of the city," another senior citizen said.

Cyclone Nisarga: BMC to conduct structural inspection of temporary COVID-19 health centres
In the wake of impending cyclone Nisarga, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday called for a structural inspection of temporary COVID-19 health centres. As a precautionary measure, the civic body has directed the contractors of the respective healthcare facilities to again review the safety and stability of the structures set up by them.
"As per IMD, there's a possibility of 'nature' cyclones/strong winds with rains in the BMC area. So, structured inspection of COVID-19 Health Centres set up temporarily at various places in the BMC area should be done again by concerned contractors," a statement said.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cyclone Nisarga is expected to affect the city today between 11 am to 7 pm.

LIVE: Cyclone Nisarga makes landfall near Maharashtra's Raigad district
The landfall process of Cyclone 'Nisarga' has begun and will continue for three hours, the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday. The right side of the cyclone's wall cloud passed through coastal Maharashtra, mainly covering the Riagad district.
"The centre of the cyclone is very close to the Maharashtra coast. The landfall process has started and it will be completed in three hours," said IMD. The north-east sector of the eye of the cyclone is currently entering the land. The severe cyclone will cross Maharashtra coast, close to Alibag in the next three hours.
"The cyclone will gradually enter into Mumbai and Thane district during the next three hours," stated IMD in its 12 p.m. bulletin. The cyclone is currently whirling with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kilometres per hour 40 km away from Alibagh, 95 km from Mumbai and 325 km from Surat.
