East coast may see formation of cyclone; likely to hit West Bengal, Odisha coast by May 27

After the west coast, another cyclone is likely to hit the east coast by May 26-27, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday.
 
A low pressure area is very likely to form over north Andaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around May 22.
 
"It is very likely to intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 72 hours. It is very likely to move northwestwards and reach West Bengal - Odisha coasts around 26th May evening," the Cyclone Warning Division of the IMD said.

Cyclone Tauktae: Southern districts in Rajasthan receive heavy rains

Cyclone Tauktae has triggered heavy rains in southern districts of Rajasthan in the last 24 hours while it is expected to weaken in the next 12 hours, Met officials said on Wednesday.
 
The cyclonic storm entered southern Rajasthan late on Tuesday night causing heavy rains in the region and it was centred 60 km southwest of Udaipur on Wednesday morning, a spokesman of the regional Meteorological Department said.
 
In the next 12 hours, the cyclone is expected to weaken and turn into a low pressure area and move to northeast Rajasthan, he said. The cyclone caused 'heavy' to 'very heavy' rainfall at some places in the southern districts of the state in the last 24 hours, as per the Met department.

PM Modi undertakes aerial survey of cyclone-affected areas in Gujarat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday undertook an aerial survey of affected areas in Gujarat and adjoining Union territory of Diu to assess the devastation caused by Cyclone Tauktae.
 
Modi is in Gujarat to review the situation in the state in the aftermath of cyclone Tauktae. He landed at Bhavnagar from Delhi around noon and proceeded for the aerial survey of Una, Diu, Jafarabad and Mahuva, an official said.

Cyclone Tauktae death toll climbs to 45 in Gujarat: Official

As many as 45 people have been killed due to cyclone Tauktae across 12 districts of Gujarat, officials said Wednesday. Fifteen deaths were reported from Amreli district in Saurashtra region, the worst affected in the cyclone that crossed the state coast as an extremely severe cyclonic storm on Monday night and completed landfall around 1.30 am Tuesday, officials said.
 
Eight people each were killed in Bhavnagar and Gir Somnath coastal districts, an official of the State Emergency Operation Centre said. Five were killed in Ahmedabad, two in Kheda, and one each in Anand, Vadodara, Surat, Valsad, Rajkot, Navsari and Panchmahal districts, the official said. While 24 deaths were due to wall collapses during the cyclone, six died after trees fell on them, five each because of house collapse and electrocution, four due to roof collapse and one died due to a tower collapse, the official said.

PM Modi reaches Gujarat to review situation after cyclone

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reached Bhavnagar in Gujarat to review the situation in the state in the aftermath of cyclone Tauktae.
 
Modi landed at Bhavnagar from Delhi and proceeded for an aerial survey of Una, Diu, Jafarabad and Mahuva, an official said.
 
After the survey, the PM is scheduled to hold a review meeting at Ahmedabad.
 
Thirteen people were killed in Gujarat as cyclone Tauktae pummelled parts of the state and left behind a trail of destruction along the coast, uprooting electric poles, trees and damaging thousands of houses and roads.

Cyclone Tauktae: Remnant of the system to move to UP in next two days

The system has weakened into a depression over south Rajasthan and adjoining Gujarat, and lies about 30 km south-southwest of Udaipur and 170 km east-northeast of Deesa in Gujarat. It is likely to gradually weaken into a well-marked low pressure area in the next 12 hours. The remnant of the system is very likely to move further northeastwards across Rajasthan to Uttar Pradesh during the next two days, the IMD said.

Chennai Corp announces Rs 2,000 fine for violating home quarantine protocol

Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to impose a fine of Rs 2,000 if Covid positive patients found violating home isolation protocol.
 
In an order by the corporation, it read, "Those under home quarantine will be fined Rs 2000, if found violating the protocols. In case of repeated violation of home isolation norms, concerned person/people will be taken to Covid care centres."
 
As per the state health bulletin yesterday, Tamil Nadu logged 33,059 new Covid-19 cases, 21,362 discharges and 364 deaths in the last 24 hours. The active cases stand at 2,31,596. Read on...
