Cyclone Yass impact: PM to visit Odisha, Bengal on Friday

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to visit Odisha and West Bengal on Friday to review the impact of Cyclone Yaas, which has now weakened into a "deep depression". PM will first land in Bhubaneswar where he will hold a review meeting. Later, he will proceed for an aerial survey of the affected areas of Odisha's Balsore, and Bhadrak, and West Bengal's East Medinipur.
 
The Prime Minister has also planned to hold a review meeting in West Bengal.
 
Yaas, which made landfall between Dhamra and Balasore in Odisha on early Wednesday, lay centred at 11.30 p.m. on May 26 over south Jharkhand and adjoining north interior Odisha near latitude 22.4 degree north and longitude 85.8 degree east, about 60 km west-southwest of Jamshedpur and 110 km south south-east of Ranchi in Jharkhand, said the National Weather Forecasting Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

PM holds a meeting to review impact of Cyclone Yaas

PM Narendra Modi chaired a meeting to review the impact of cyclone Yaas. Officials made a detailed presentation on various aspects of preparedness, assessment of damages and related matters.
 
It was discussed that about 106 teams of NDRF were deployed with 46 teams each in West Bengal/ Odisha that rescued more than 1000 persons and removed more than 2500 trees/poles that had fallen & obstructed the roads. The Defence Forces namely Army and Coast Guard also rescued marooned persons, while Navy & Air Force were on the alert.

800,000 affected due to cyclone in Jharkhand, rescue operations underway

At least eight lakh people in Jharkhand have been affected by Cyclone 'Yaas', which barrelled through the state early on Thursday, unleashing copious rain that lashed parts of the state, including Ranchi, and throwing life out of gear in many areas, officials said.
 
Around 15,000 people have been evacuated and moved to safety, and rescue operations are still underway in East Singhbhum district among other places, as water level in several rivers, including Kharkhai and Subarnarekha, continues to flow above the danger mark.

Naveen Patnaik undertakes aerial survey of cyclone-hit areas in Odisha

A day after cyclone Yaas left behind a trail of destruction across north-coastal Odisha, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday undertook an aerial survey of the affected areas to assess the damages caused by the calamity.
 
Though at least three persons have reportedly been killed due to the cyclone, the state administration is yet to confirm the causes of their deaths.
 
"The government will announce the death toll due to the cyclone only after proper verification is carried out by the local administrations in Keonjhar, Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts," Special Relief Commissioner P K Jena said.

Cyclone Yaas weakens into deep depression, likely to move north-westwards

The cyclonic storm 'Yaas' in Bay of Bengal has weakened into a "deep depression" and is very likely to move further northwestwards and weaken gradually during the next 12 hours.
 
'Yaas', which is crossing between Dhamra and Balasore in Odisha, lay centred at 11.30 p.m. on May 26 over south Jharkhand and adjoining north interior Odisha near latitude 22.4 degree north and longitude 85.8 degree east, about 60 km west-southwest of Jamshedpur and 110 km south south-east of Ranchi in Jharkhand, said the National Weather Forecasting Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
 
The cyclone is very likely to move further northwestwards and weaken gradually into a depression during next 12 hours. The storm had commenced the landfall process around 9 a.m. on Wednesday. As per the IMD's 2.30 a.m. report, the last hourly bulletin regarding 'Yaas', the cyclone then intensified near the centre with windspeeds of about 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph.

UN agencies ready to support Cyclone Yaas response efforts in India

As Tropical Cyclone Yaas ravaged parts of India's eastern coast, a spokesperson for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said the world body and its agencies stand ready to support the response efforts if state authorities request it, while expressing concern that lack of social distancing in emergency shelters and temporary suspension of vaccination campaigns amid the COVID-19 pandemic could further complicate the health crisis.

Seven Indian Navy teams from Visakhapatnam are taking part in relief operations in the aftermath of cyclone Yaas in West Bengal.
 
"7 Indian Navy teams from Visakhapatnam, comprising 2 Diving and 5 Flood Relief Teams (FRT) undertake relief operations in aftermath of impending Cyclone Yaas at 3 separate locations-Digha, Fraserganj and Diamond Harbour in West Bengal," said the Indian Navy on Thursday.

Preventive measures by Odisha energy dept minimised cyclone Yaas damage

The impact of Cyclone Yaas on Odisha's electricity supply infrastructure was minimised significantly because of timely action by the state Energy Department, said an official.
 
The Department had been planning in advance for a possible summer cyclone in the month of May and damages to Low Tension (LT) network could be minimised due to preventive maintenance, tree pruning, and other precautionary steps in advance, said Principal Secretary, Energy Nikunja Bihari Dhal on Wednesday.
 
"We had meticulously planned and positioned men, materials and equipment at strategic locations to begin restoration work immediately after the cyclone recedes" he stated.
