DATA STORY: India's Covid tally up by 366,161; sharp drop in new active cases

India on Monday reported a net increase of 8,589 in active coronavirus cases to take its count to 3,745,237. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 20.54 per cent (one in 5). The country is second among the most affected countries by active cases. On Monday, it added 366,161 cases to take its total caseload to 22,662,575. And, with 3,754 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 246,116, or 1.09 per cent of total confirmed infections.

 

With 689,652 more Covid-19 vaccine doses being administered on Sunday, India’s total count of vaccine shots so far reached 170,176,603. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 18,671,222 – or 82.39 per cent of total caseload – with 353,818 new cured cases being reported on Monday.

 

• With a daily increase of 366,161 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 22,296,414 on Sunday to 22,662,575 – an increase of 1.6%. Death toll has reached 246,116, with 3,754 fatalities. Now the second-most-affected country by active cases, total cases and recovery, and fourth by death, India has added 2,736,971 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 20.53% of all active cases globally (one in every 5 active cases), and 7.44% of all deaths (one in every 14 deaths).
• India has so far administered 170,176,603 vaccine doses. That is 807.39 per cent of its total caseload, and 12.23 per cent of its population.
• Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (22714028), Rajasthan (18858241), Uttar Pradesh (18249556), Gujarat (17879291), and West Bengal (16025541).
• Among states with more than 10 million population, the top 5 in number of vaccine shots per one million population are Kerala (293927), Gujarat (279922), Delhi (263642), Uttarakhand (259944), and J&K (247270).

• The count of active cases across India on Monday saw a net increase of 8,589, compared with 13,202 on Sunday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Karnataka (15644), Madhya Pradesh (6427), Kerala (6415), Tamil Nadu (5146), and Andhra Pradesh (3240).
• With 353818 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 82.39%, while fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.09%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.38%), Sikkim (1.69%), and Uttarakhand (1.53%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 357,572 — 3,754 deaths and 353,818 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.05%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 1.9%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 42.6 days, and for deaths at 45.1 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (48401), Karnataka (47930), Kerala (35801), Tamil Nadu (28897), and Uttar Pradesh (23175).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Uttarakhand (68.13%), Karnataka (69.85%), Goa (71.77%), Rajasthan (72.80%), and Himachal Pradesh (73.86%).
• India on Sunday conducted 1,474,606 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 303,750,077. The test positivity rate recorded was 24.8%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Maharashtra (17.33%), Goa (16.68%), Dadra & Nagar Haveli-Daman & Diu (12.22%), Chandigarh (11.47%), and Kerala (11.17%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Goa (46.43%), Himachal Pradesh (33.02%), Karnataka (32.72%), West Bengal (30.81%), and Kerala (28.88%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (952014), J&K (562459), Kerala (477132), Karnataka (399899), and Uttarakhand (360612).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (5101737), Karnataka (1934378), Kerala (1902628), Uttar Pradesh (1503490), and Tamil Nadu (1380259).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 48,401 new cases to take its tally to 5101737. The state has added 562,184 cases in the past 10 days.
• Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 47,930 cases to take its tally to 1934378.
• Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 35,801 cases to take its tally to 1902628.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 23,175 cases to take its tally to 1503490.
• Tamil Nadu has added 28,897 cases to take its tally to 1380259.
• Delhi has added 13,336 cases to take its tally to 1323567.
• Andhra Pradesh has seen its tally going up by 22,164 to 1287603.
