National Mazdoor Conference (NMC) today urged upon Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to declare 'May Day' as a gazetted holiday throughout the country.

"We urge the Prime Minister to declare 'May Day' as a gazetted holiday throughout the country Under Negotiable Instrument Act as a befitting tribute to May Day martyrs and recognising the valuable contribution of the working class in the all-round development of the country", NMC President Subash Shastri said.

Because of the May Day martyrs, the working class got their rights throughout the world and India being the largest and most vibrant democracy across the globe and frontline welfare State should also declare May 1 as gazette holiday, Shastri said while addressing a rally of workers at Utterbeni in Samba district.

He said that this will be a great gesture and will fullfill the most genuine and long-pending demands of the working class.

The NMC President said that the then government led by V P Singh had declared May Day as a gazetted holiday in the country in 1990, why it has not been done their after.

Pleading the cause of state government employees and pensioners, Shastri also expressed his concern over the "delay" in release of 10 per cent DA due from January last and 4th installment of 6th pay commission arrears.
