Gujarat and Maharashtra received heavy showers on Tuesday afternoon as a "deep depression" over the Arabian Sea crossed the coast of Diu and is now tipped to help the progress of monsoon in northern India.

According to the meteorological department, the deep depression will bring in more moisture and hence, drive the advancement of monsoon in North India.

"The deep depression crossed Diu between 2.30 pm and 3.30 pm. It now lies over Saurashtra, 65-km south-southeast of Amreli. It is moving east-northeastwards. The deep depression will bring good rainfall in Gujarat, Rajasthan, parts of Madhya Pradesh and eastern Uttar Pradesh," said Mritunjay Mohapatra, scientist in-charge of Cyclone Warning Division of the India Meteorological Department.

The depression brought good rainfall in Gujarat and the northern coast of Maharashtra, including its capital Mumbai, which was brought to a standstill last week by torrential showers.
