Delhi violence: Display names, addresses of those arrested, CPI(M) to police

CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat has written to acting city Police Commissioner S N Shrivastava demanding that the names of those arrested in connection with the violence in northeast Delhi be made public.
 
A similar demand was made on Sunday by rights activists who said that it is mandated by law that police stations display the names of those arrested with their addresses.
 
"Despite the express mandate of the law, the names and addresses of all arrested persons are not being displayed at the Police Control Room. Not only this, the details are not being displayed at each individual police station as well," Karat said in her letter to Shrivastava.
 
"In light of the incidents and prevailing circumstances, you would appreciate the need for strict compliance with this provision, as such transparency and compliance of the legal mandate will go a long way towards dispelling rumours and misinformation that are plaguing the lives of all those affected," she said.

Youth Congress workers hold protest march against Delhi violence

Hundreds of Indian Youth Congress members on Monday organised a protest march from Dr Rajendra Prasad Road here against the communal riots in Delhi, demanding Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation, but were stopped by police shortly after.
 
Police barricaded the road even as the protesters tried to climb them.
 
Several IYC protesters were detained.
 
The workers of the Congress' youth wing also demanded registration of FIR against BJP leaders Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma for their purported hate speeches .

Delhi violence state-sponsored genocide, says Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged the communal violence in Delhi was "state-sponsored genocide" and the BJP was trying to replicate the "Gujarat model of riots" across the country.
 
Addressing a TMC event, Banerjee also condemned those who raised the controversial "goli maro..." slogan while heading to Home Minister Amit Shah's rally in the city on Sunday.
 
"I am deeply pained by the killing of innocent people in Delhi. I think it was genocide... the violence in Delhi was state-sponsored," she said.
 
Banerjee claimed it was due to the CAA that "so many people were killed" in the Delhi violence. "Amit Shah should keep this in mind".
 
She said the BJP should apologise for the Delhi riots.
 
"The BJP is trying to replicate the Gujarat model of riots across India, including in West Bengal," the chief minister added.

Congress MPs protest in Parl complex over Delhi riots

Congress MPs, including former party chief Rahul Gandhi, on Monday held a protest inside the Parliament premises over the issue of communal riots in Delhi and demanded Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation.
 
Leaders from the opposition party have also given adjournment notices in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, demanding a debate over the violence in Delhi which has claimed at least 42 lives.
 
Demonstrating in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue inside the Parliament complex, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Adhir Ranjan Choudhary, Shashi Tharoor and others raised slogans and demanded Shah's resignation.
 
The Congress MPs held placards reading 'Save Our India', 'Prime Minister Must Answer' and 'Shah Must Resign'.
 
"When Delhi was burning, our home minister was playing the host in Ahmedabad. Playing a host is fine, but when Indians were being killed, that should have been the priority," Congress' leader in Lok Sabha Chowdhury said referring to the 'Namaste Trump' programme in which Shah had participated.

Delhi violence: Congress demands Amit Shah's resignation

The Congress held protests outside parliament on Monday, demanding Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation for allegedly failing to maintain law & order in Delhi. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was also seen to be back in action after his rumoured vacation.
 
Holding posters like "PM jawab do" and chanting slogans of "Amit Shah istifa do", the Congress brigade was seen standing around Gandhi statue in the parliament premises. Party MPs Gaurav Gogoi, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Shashi Tharoor among others demanded Shah take responsibility for the Delhi riots that killed at least 45 people including a Delhi police personnel on duty and an IB staffer with 400 injured.
 
However, Rahul Gandhi wasn't seen chanting slogans.

Delhi violence: HC asks police to file report on rehabilitation measures for victims

The Delhi High Court on Monday asked the police to file a status report on measures taken by it for medical treatment and rehabilitation of violence-affected people in northeast Delhi.
 
A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar directed the Delhi Police to submit a report on the measures taken by them in compliance with the court's February 26 order by which certain directions were made for rehabilitation of victims.
 
The court listed the matter for further hearing on April 30.

Over 92 pc attendance recorded in CBSE board exams in violence-hit northeast Delhi

Over 92 per cent attendance was recorded in the board exams held in violence-hit northeast Delhi on Monday, the Central Board for Secondary Exams (CBSE) said.
 
Class 12 and class 10 students had their physics and music papers on Monday.
 
The CBSE had said on Sunday that any further delay in conducting board exams in violence-affected parts of North East Delhi may hamper chances of students in securing admission to professional courses like medical and engineering.

Kolkata Police arrests 3 'BJP supporters' for 'goli maro...' slogan

Kolkata Police on Monday claimed to have arrested three BJP supporters for allegedly raising the incendiary "desh ke gaddaro ko, goli maro ... " (shoot the traitors) slogan while they were on their way to attend Union Home Minister Amit Shah's rally in the city.
 
"This illegal act of passing provocative slogans was done by BJP supporters. It is a cognisable offence," a senior official of the Kolkata Police said.
 
Based on the complaint lodged by a person at the New Market Police Station on Sunday, police arrested the trio.
 
The three, identified as Dhruva Basu, Pankaj Prasad, and Surendra Kumar Tewary, were arrested on Sunday night, the official said.
 
"They have been booked under four sections including two non-bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code. They will be produced at a city court today," the IPS officer said.

Delhi LG Anil Baijal meets PM Modi to discuss Delhi violence

Delhi LG Anil Baijal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday for almost an hour and they are likely to have discussed the violence in the national capital.
"I met PM Modi," said Baijal after the meeting but did not reveal what was discussed.
 
The two are likely to have discussed the violence in the city, sources said.
 
At least 46 people have lost their lives and over 200 were injured when clashes broke out between two communities lasting three days in northeast Delhi.

Delhi violence: SC agrees to hear plea seeking lodging of FIRs tomorrow

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear on March 4 a plea seeking lodging of FIRs against politicians and others for their purported hate speeches which allegedly led to recent violence in Delhi.
 
The plea filed by some riot victims was mentioned for urgent listing before a bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde, which said it would be heard on Wednesday.
Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for the petitioners, told the bench that the Delhi High Court has deferred the pleas on Delhi violence for four weeks despite the fact that people are still dying.
 
The bench told Gonsalves that courts are not equipped to control riots and it is the job of the executive.
 
"We would wish peace but you know that there are limitations," the bench observed, adding, "Courts are not equipped to handle such kind of pressure".
 
"We also read newspapers and the comments which are made," the CJI said.

Congress, AAP, TMC MPs protest against govt over Delhi violence

Congress, Trinamool and AAP MPs staged separate dharnas today near the Gandhi statue in Parliament, demanding answers from the government on the Delhi riots on the first day of the second half of the Budget Session.
 
Covering their eyes with black bands and holding a finger on their lips in an apparent imitation of the Gandhi's Three Monkeys, MPs like Mohua Mitra, Sukhendu Shekhar Rai were part of the protest.
 
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Adhir Ranjan Choudhary, Shashi Tharoor and others held placards demanding answers on the Delhi riots and the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah.
 
Another protest, this time by four AAP MPs -- Sanjay Singh, Bhagwant Mann, N D Gupta and Sushil Gupta -- was held in front of Gandhi statue of Parliament against violence in Delhi. They raised slogans of "BJP murdabad".

Delhi Assembly has constituted a 9-member 'Peace & Harmony Committee'. It will be headed by AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj, and includes MLAs Atishi&Raghav Chadha. The first meeting of the committee will be held today at 3 pm at Delhi Secretariat.
