Sweltering heat is taking the power demand in Delhi to unprecedented levels. The peak power demand of the city touched 5,925 Mw on Tuesday, twice the demand in Mumbai (3,400 Mw) and thrice that in Kolkata (2,100 Mw).
As the temperature touched 39.2 degrees’ Celsius, along with rising levels of humidity and no rainfall in sight, the city's power demand broke all records. The monsoon this year is weak, thanks to a looming El Niño threat. This is the third time in two weeks that the power demand in Delhi has broken records. On July 10, the peak power demand touched 5,789 Mw and the following day it was 5,810 Mw at 3:58 pm, said BSES officials.
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) said the company on Friday had supplied an all-time high of 1,678 Mw of power in its areas of north and northwest Delhi. Last year, on June 24, TPDDL supplied 1,508 Mw of maximum power. The season’s highest peak power demand then touched 5,653 Mw. TPDDL said it was also an all-time record in terms of energy supplied i.e. 34.59 million units compared to 31.66 million units last year.
