Delhi smog: Metro suspends all excavation, backfilling works for 5 days

BS Reporter New Delhi
In view of the thick smog in Delhi and adjoining areas since the last few days, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has decided to suspend excavation, backfilling work for five days.

Dry dismantling of concrete or brick that may cause dust pollution and dry stone cutting to be suspended for five days, DMRC said in a statement.

DG (diesel-generator) sets will be stopped except those required for safety and security and any other activity causing dust to be suspended for five days.

These steps have been taken as compliance of the instructions given by the Delhi government regarding construction sites, it added.

Water is sprinkled regularly to avoid soil erosion and dust pollution. Grass paving and tree plantation are also quick and effective means of dust control as grass covers and protects exposed loose soil when winds kick up as the soil stays put, DMRC said.

Motorized vehicles at sites are restricted to a maximum speed of 10-15 kilometers per hour this results in less dust emission and improved safety.

All construction activities are carried out in accordance with DMRC’s Environmental Policy.
