Delhi violence: Victims recount tales of horror

"We jumped from the first floor with dupattas wrapped around our bodies to save ourselves," says a 45-year-old woman at northeast Delhi's Al-Hind Hospital, recalling how she and her two daughters were forced to flee their home after a mob allegedly barged in and molested them on Wednesday night.

The nightmare ended only after the women entered a Muslim-dominated lane.

"I was at home when a mob barged in. I and my two daughters were molested and our clothes torn by the mob," the quadragenarian, who runs an NGO in Karawal Nagar, said with tears in her eyes.

She said the mob chased them but stopped and eventually disappeared after they sought refuge in the house of Ayub Ahmed, a grocery shop owner known to them.

"When we reached Ahmed's house, he gave us food and other necessary things and later brought us to the Al-Hind Hospital. I can identify the miscreants as they were from our lane," she added.

Salman Khan (20), a resident of Karawal Nagar, said he was near his house on Tuesday night when a mob poured a chemical on his back that caused his skin to burn.

"Some unidentified people caught me near my house and poured an acid-like liquid on my back. I have no idea what the substance was. It was very hot and my skin started burning as soon as they poured it on me," he said.

A Delhi neighbourhood divided by a highway and now hatred

The Hindu area of Bhajanpura and Muslim quarter of Chand Bagh face each other across a wide thoroughfare running through the northeastern part of India's capital, New Delhi.

After days of deadly riots between members of the two communities, neighbourhoods that lived happily together for years are now divided by far more than a road.
Mutual fear and suspicion have replaced generally cordial relations, a change that could make it harder to defuse tensions between India's Hindu majority and its sizeable Muslim minority that have worsened during months of street protests.

From legal counselling to offering food, good samaritans flock GTB Hospital

From providing legal counselling to offering food to the wearied people gathered outside the mortuary at the GTB Hospital here, many good samaritans have volunteered to help the kin of those who have died in the riots in northeast Delhi. At the mortuary, scenes of grieving family members added to the sombre ambience. But in that milling crowd, two men in black coats could be seen assisting families in identifying bodies or informing them about their legal rights.

Farhan Azimi, who practices at Saket district court and Mumtaz Hashmi from Tis Hazari court jotted down details of victims and their family members in a register.
"We are taking down details, including name, address and phone numbers so that we can reach out to them in future. In many cases, victims are made the accused, as we have seen in the past. So, we want to give the families legal counselling so that they know their legal rights," Azimi told PTI.

Kapil Mishra says he's being questioned instead of those talking of dividing country

BJP politician Kapil Mishra, accused of making hate speech before communal violence unfolded in northeast Delhi this week, on Thursday said he was being questioned for urging anti-CAA protestors to clear road blockades while those talking of "dividing" the country were not. Mishra, in the spotlight for his incendiary remarks calling for forceful removal of citizenship law protestors last week, made the comment as he carried out a "peace march" from Jantar Mantar to Delhi Police headquarters, even as a TV channel journalist was heckled during the event allegedly by his supporters.
