Discount offers by domestic airlines have led to a surge in leisure trips in the long Holi weekend, with 60 per cent of travellers booking 15-90 days in advance, according to the findings of Cleartrip.

“We saw a robust 44 per cent growth in bookings for this long Holi weekend compared to 2014. Over 66 per cent of travellers planned their Holi weekend travel 15-90 days in advance,” said Samyukth Sridharan, president, Cleartrip.

Tour operator Thomas Cook has seen a 22 to 28 per cent rise in bookings within India and abroad. “At Thomas Cook, weekend holidays are a strategic focus, given the strong potential,” said Rajeev Kale, president meeting incentive and domestic.

“We have seen a 30 to 33 per cent surge in travel during this Holi weekend. People are choosing to celebrate Holi in resorts, or are going for Holi celebrations at Jaipur or at Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura, Vrindavan, and Barsana,” said Vikram Malhi, managing director, Asia, Expedia.

“Popular destinations this season include Shimla and Kashmir for Delhi-based travellers and Goa for Bengaluru- and Mumbai-based travellers. Compared to regular weekends, for this long weekend, we have seen a spike of 25 to 30 per cent in hotel and holiday bookings,” said Kousik Bhattacharya, head of marketing at Via.com.
