Uttarakhand on Friday said the water level in the Himalayan lake of Satopanth Tal was normal and there was no cause for worry. This was after it had issued an alert.

The statement came after Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna held talks with scientists of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology and the Uttarakhand Space Application Centre.

An alert had been issued on Thursday by the Chamoli district authorities after a satellite report indicated a glacier might have melted into the lake, bordering Tibet. "We are still on the alert. We have sent messages to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and our police chowki in Badrinath to monitor the water level in the Alaknanda river which originates near Satopanth Glacier," said Sanjay Kumar, additional district magistrate, Chamoli.

The chief minister also asked the scientists to prepare a report on all the glaciers and lakes in the state.
