Day 23 of farmers' agitation: Union leaders to seek legal opinion

The farmers' agitation continued on the 23rd day on Friday and their unions were busy chalking out strategies to intensify the protest. As the issue is now in the Supreme Court, the farmer leaders are not only keeping an eye on the proceedings but are also seeking legal opinions.

Although the apex court has not yet delivered any order asking the farmers to vacate the roads. The farmer leaders say that if they are served any notices from the court, they will take support from their lawyers.

Major Singh Punawal, general secretary of Punjab's All India Kisan Sabha, told IANS, "When the farmers will receive a notice regarding their protest from the SC, we will take the legal opinion from the lawyers." Punawal said the protest by the farmers is going on in a peaceful manner and will continue till the government rolls back all the three farm laws. He said tributes will be paid on December 20 to those farmers who died during the protests.

Farmers have been camping since November 26 at the Delhi borders. They are demanding the withdrawal of all three new farm laws implemented by the Central government during the coronavirus pandemic.

With folded hands, PM Modi urges Opposition not to mislead farmers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday requested political parties with "folded hands" to keep all the credit for their "old election manifestos" which had reportedly promised agriculture sector reforms and urged them to stop misguiding the farmers over the new farm laws.

"I request all political parties with folded hands, please keep all the credit. I am giving credit to all your old election manifestos. I just want ease in the life of farmers, I want their progress and want modernity in agriculture," said PM Modi while addressing farmers at the 'Kisan Kalyan' event in Raisen through video conferencing. "Political parties should stop misguiding farmers. It's been six to seven months since farm laws were implemented. But now suddenly, games are being played to plough one's own political land through a web of lies," he added.

The Prime Minister further said, those who have started this movement in the name of farmers, when they had a chance to run the government or become part of the government, what they did back then, the country needs to remember.

"Swaminathan Commission report is the biggest proof of how ruthless these people can be. These people sat on Swaminathan Commission report recommendations for 8 long years...They ensured that their govt doesn't have to spend much on farmers, so they kept the report under wraps," said PM Modi.

MSP to continue; farm laws 'not been brought in overnight': PM Modi

Recently enacted laws giving farmers freedom in selling their produce "have not been brought in overnight" but are opposed by political parties for selfish reasons, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday as he insisted that support price for agricultural produce will continue.

"Farm laws have not been introduced overnight. Over last 20-30 years, central and state governments had detailed discussions on these reforms. Agriculture experts, economists and progressive farmers have been demanding such reforms,” he said in a speech, as protests continued outside Delhi against the reforms.

"Those who governed before us wrote tall promises in their election manifestos and gave big assurances to farmers, but after winning the elections they did nothing about the farmers and the promises made to them. For decades the farmers were neglected," he said in a speech video streamed to farmers in Madhya Pradesh.
