The Food and Drugs Administration department has shut down the canteen of Collectorate building in South Goa's Margao town.

FDA Director Salim Veljee confirmed that the canteen was closed, after a raid on Friday.

"The canteen is still shut down as they have not yet abided by the directives of the department," he said.

The newly constructed Collectorate building was inaugurated last December and houses several government departments dealing with the administration in South district.

FDA sources stated that an inspection of the canteen was conducted after the department received several complaints about unhygienic conditions prevailing there.

"What we found during raid was really saddening. The hygiene was not maintained. The department has issued notice, after shutting down the canteen. It will be restarted only after the contractor abides by all the rules and takes all the precautions," Veljee said.
