The Union Government on Wednesday declared the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) an unlawful organisation and banned it for a period of five years.

"The government after elaborate consideration, based upon objective evidence, has decided that the NSCN-K is an unlawful organisation and banned it for a period of five years under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act 1967," Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told media here.

"We reached an agreement on a ceasefire with the NSCN-IM on April 27 this year. The NSCN-K has been involved in illegal activities like bombings and explosion in the last few months," he added.

Prasad further said that an ambush party of NSCN-K was creating a lot of problem for security personnel in the border areas.

"NSCN-K was involved in the planning of the ambush on the 6 Dogra Army convoy on June 4 in Manipur that left 18 Army personnel dead," he added.
