Bountiful rainfall in the last leg of monsoon in Haryana has raised the hopes of better returns for farmers of the state. The revival of monsoon in the first week of September is expected to help the farmers of all important kharif crops in the state.

Haryana registered a rainfall deficit of 55-60 per cent till the last week of August, and the state chief minister declared it a drought year. The late monsoon rally across the state is likely to fetch higher yields of paddy and cotton crop.

"The rain at this juncture was unexpected, but it will benefit most of the farmers. There are dry areas in the western part of the state, growing cotton. The crop is about to reach the flowering stage and rainfall is quite beneficial at this stage," said Sushil Mittal, a cotton farmer from Sirsa and president of Haryana Cotton Ginners' Association.

There might be some pockets where rainfall, coupled with strong winds, caused harm to the crop, but in most parts we needed rain as it is the purest form of water and helps in containing many diseases in the plants, he said.

Haryana is grappling with power shortage, as the supply from private power producer, Adani Power (1424 Mw), has been suspended after the power provider sought a tariff revision. The matter is sub-judice.
