HC allows IOCL to draw water from Mahanadi

IOCL has already deposited Rs 10 cr for development of Shishu Bhawan, a paediatric hospital in Cuttack city

The Odisha High Court today allowed Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) to draw water from river Mahanadi for its refinery-cum-petrochemicals project at Paradip subject to fulfilment of conditions.

"The High Court today asked IOCL to deposit Rs three crore with Registrar General, Odisha High Court in seven days. The money will be used for improvement of traffic system in Cuttack city. IOCL will also provide five high tech ambulances. Besides, the company has been asked to deposit Rs 10 crore as an advance with the secretary of water resources department for dredging and old anicut removal and Rs 25 lakh for preparation of detailed project report for removal of shoals to increase the carrying capacity of the Mahanadi reservoir (Jobra) in ten days," said Sanjit Mohanty, advocate, IOCL.
 
The company has filed an application with the High Court intimating the court to comply with all conditions.

IOCL has already deposited Rs 10 crore for development of Shishu Bhawan, a paediatric hospital in Cuttack city.

Earlier, IOCL had approached the Supreme Court of India challenging the High Court order, but the apex court had upheld the verdict of the high court.
