Today is International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. An issue that plagues the lives of everyone directly or indirectly around the globe.

According to UN reports, 230 million people around the world are using drugs. A scary number considering the activity eventually leads to death, a painful one at that.

In India, the issue is more serious than everyone lets on.

According to a government data released in Parliament last year, India has more than 10.7 million drug abusers, which is more than the population of Sweden, India Spend reports. But all we the people of India got was a message from the President. Our dear Prime Minister forgot to even tweet about it.

Does it mean than no one cares? Which explains why national anti- narcotics agency is still working with a head. It's been almost four month since India’s premier Anti narcotics agency, The Narcotics Control Bureau NCB) is working without a regular chief, after incumbent Rajiv Mehta was appointed as The DGP of Meghalaya.

As usual everyone expects at least the responsible social media buffs to actively participate by trending a hashtag. But surprisingly twitteratis kept a partial silence on the subject.

The silence is not complete, because surprisingly “Illicit Trafficking” was trending in India till mid-day. But where did drug abuse go? Even if the ‘responsible youth’ forgot about the President, Pranab Mukherjee’s speech on drug abuse, they should at least have read the word in the name of the day everyone is supposed to commemorate.

But not everyone turned a blind eye. Sex workers of Kolkata will launch a drug awareness programme among customers. An NGO working for them is organising the programme on Friday in the city. The wounded of the society helping the sufferers, when no one else gave a thought.
