1960-64: At age 12, gives her debut public dance performance in Mylapore (May 1962). Delivers several stage performances
1964: Achieves stardom, at age 16, with the success of Kannada film, Chinnada Gombe.

POLITICAL CAREER
1982: Joins AIADMK, founded by M G Ramachandran (MGR)
1983: Becomes AIADMK propaganda secretary, is selected as candidate in the by-election for the Tiruchendur Assembly seat
1984: Is elected to Rajya Sabha. MGR had nominated her for her English language skills
1984: Is said to have tried taking over as Tamil Nadu CM, after MGR suffers a stroke; successfully leads 1984 general election campaign, in alliance with Congress
1987: MGR dies, party split into Jayalalithaa faction and Janaki (MGR's widow) faction; after a brief tussle, wrests control from Janaki to succeed her as state CM
1989: elected to TN Legislative Assembly. Jayalalithaa-led faction of AIADMK wins 27 seats, she becomes first woman to be elected Leader of the Opposition. In February 1989, the two factions of ADMK merged, unanimously accepting Jayalalithaa as leader
25 March 1989: In what is literally her 'Draupadi moment' she is attacked and molested by ruling DMK party members; leaves assembly with her saree torn, generating huge sympathy
1989: Her party enters pact with Congress, posts significant victory
1991: Rides piggyback on her party's coalition with Congress, which sweeps the general elections due to a sympathy wave following Rajiv Gandhi's assassination
1991-96: Becomes the first female, and youngest-ever Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to serve her full term
1996: Her party is trounced in 1996 polls, taking only 4 of the 168 seats contested. Jayalalithaa herself loses to DMK candidate in Bargur Constituency. Anti-incumbency, charges of corruption cited as reasons for drubbing
2001: Barred from contesting polls for having been found guilty in TANSI land scam case and other offences. Despite this, AIADMK wins majority, and she becomes Chief Minister as a non-elected member of the state assembly in May
December 4, 2001: Madras HC acquits her in both TANSI land case and Pleasant Stay hotel case for which she had been convicted and given a year in jail. Supreme Court upholds HC order on November 24, 2003
April 2011: AIADMK is part of a 13-party alliance that wins 14th state assembly polls. Jayalalithaa sworn in as Tamil Nadu CM for the third time on 16 May 2011
December 19, 2011: Jayalalithaa expels her long-time close aide Sasikala Natarajan and 13 others from party
February 2, 2012: Tehelka magazine claimed Sasikala and some relatives were conspiring to kill Jayalalithaa
March 31, 2012: Sasikala reinstated as party member after issuing a written apology
September 27, 2014: Becomes the first CM of any Indian state to be to be disqualified due to conviction in a disproportionate assets case. Given four years in jail, fined Rs 100 crore
May 2015: Karnataka HC acquits her in disproportionate assets case; she is back as CM
June 27, 2015: Is subsequently re-elected from Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar of North Chennai in a by-election
May 2016: Is re-elected as Chief Minister, takes oath for the sixth time
LAST DAYS
September 22, 2016: Admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai after complaining of "fever and dehydration". In the early days of her admission takes key decisions on bonus for state PSU staff, works behind the scenes in talks with Karnatka over Cauvery waters
October 2, 2016: Develops infection; hospital stay extended
October 3, 2016: PIL filed over state of Jayalalithaa's health; Madras HC seeks information about her condition the following day, dismisses PIL on October 10
October 14, 2016: AIADMK says CM has consented to 45th anniversary celebrations even as she remains in hospital.
November 5, 2016: Jayalalithaa has completely recovered, says Apollo Hospital
November 19, 2016: Jayalalithaa shifted to normal ward. By this time she has already spent nearly two months in hospital
December 4, 2016: AIIMS team confirms she has completely recovered, her party says
