Tourism industry estimates losses worth Rs 20 bn due to Kerala floods
 
The tourism industry in Kerala is estimating losses worth Rs 20 billion due to the floods which include Rs 15 billion as the opportunity lost during the last two months and another two to three months.
 
Sabarimala, one of the major pilgrim centres in South India, has seen a loss of around Rs 1 billion and is expecting the situation to remain bleak during this pilgrimage season if at least a bridge is not built for the pilgrims to travel to the Lord Ayyappa Temple. The government has said that it would hand over the task of building two bailey bridges at Pamba to the Indian Army and which will be ready before the upcoming season.

Apple donates Rs 70 million for Kerala's flood victims
 
Heartbroken by the catastrophic flooding in Kerala, US tech giant Apple on Saturday announced to donate Rs 70 million towards the ongoing relief work.
 
"We're heartbroken by the catastrophic flooding in Kerala. Apple is donating Rs 70 million to support the life saving work Mercy Corps India and the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund are undertaking to support survivors, help those who have been displaced and rebuild homes and schools," the Cupertino-based iPhone maker said in a statement.

869,000 still in relief camps

With water receding and more people returning home from relief camps, the Kerala government today made a strong pitch for assistance and expresed hope that the Centre would accept the UAE aid "offer" of Rs 7 billion.
 
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the state was facing the biggest calamity in 100 years and preliminary estimate of losses comes around Rs 20 billion.

No aid finalised officially for Kerala flood relief: UAE officials
 
UAE ambassador Ahmed Albannam, without mentioning financial aid, said his government only set up a national emergency committee to provide relief assistance to people affected by flash floods in Kerala.
 
"The UAE has not officially announced any financial aid for Kerala flood relief. We have not conveyed anything to India on any assistance," said a senior official in the UAE embassy.

Railway recruitment test for Kerala candidates to be held on Sept 4

The railways' computer-based exams which were postponed in Kerala in the wake of the devastating floods have been rescheduled for September 4, a senior official said on Friday.
 
Around 30,000 candidates who had been unable to appear in the exam will now be able to do so, the railways has said.

With more than a million people displaced by flooding in Kerala, Britain-based charity Christian Aid on Friday warned that more devastating floods in India will become the norm if nothing is done to tackle climate change.
 
Simultaneously, it plans to support 10,000 people in each of the flood-hit Wayanad and Idukki districts.

India Cements Ltd today said its team is covering 12 districts across flood-hit Kerala to take up relief and rehabilitation measures in the state.
 
A team, led by vice-president (marketing) of the company Anilkumar, mobilised relief materials such as food, water, candles, clothes, medicines from different parts of Tamil Nadu for the affected people in the neighbouring state, a spokesman of India Cements said.

CMDRF has announced a special lottery to raise additional relief funds for the flood-ravaged state, Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac said here on Friday.
 
Issac told the media that the cost of a ticket would be Rs 250 with the draw on October 3, with the entire proceeds of the lottery going towards the CMDRF.

Kerala BJP says UAE didn't announce financial aid

The Kerala unit of the BJP on Friday said that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) did not announce financial aid of $100 million for the flood-ravaged state.
 
It demanded that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reveal the source who told him about the assistance.

The two accused, S Thomas and M P Dinesh, were stopped by residents at a relief camp Panamaram village while they were loading the relief materials into a vehicle.
 
Thomas and Dinesh said that they were moving the materials to another camp in the village. But the residents called the police and upon interrogation it was found that they lied.
 
Meanwhile, a similar incident was also reported from Chengannur where the accused was a temporary govt official.
