442 infra projects show cost overruns of Rs 4.34 lakh cr

As many as 442 infrastructure projects, each worth Rs 150 crore or more, have been hit by cost overruns of over Rs 4.34 lakh crore, according to a report. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation monitors infrastructure projects worth Rs 150 crore and above. Of the 1,671 such projects, 442 reported cost overruns and 536 time escalation. "Total original cost of implementation of the 1,671 projects was Rs 21,21,383.82 crore and their anticipated completion cost is likely to be Rs 25,55,957.52 crore, which reflects overall cost overruns of Rs 4,34,573.70 crore (20.49 per cent of original cost)," the ministry's latest report for November 2020 said.

Govt shells out Rs 22,087 cr as interest towards recap bonds for banks

The government has spent Rs 22,086.54 crore as interest payment towards the recapitalisation bonds for the public sector banks (PSB) in the last two financial years. During 2018-19, the government paid Rs 5,800.55 crore as interest on such bonds issued to public sector banks for pumping in capital so that they could meet the regulatory norms under the Basel-III guidelines. In the subsequent year, according to official document, the interest payment by the government surged three times to Rs 16,285.99 crore to PSBs as they have been holding these papers.

Composed Rahane makes half-century to take India to 189-5 at tea on day 2

Captain Ajinkya Rahane led by example with a dogged half-century as India closed in on Australia's first-innings total of 195 all out in the second Test here on Sunday. At tea on the second day, Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja were batting on 53 and 4 respectively, as the visitors reached 189 for five. Sentenced to death in Bangladesh, man illegally crossed into India; held in Delhi

A convict, who entered India illegally, after being sentenced to death in Bangladesh, has been arrested from Delhi's Khanpur with a loaded pistol by a Special Task Force (STF) of the Crime Branch, the Delhi Police said. According to Delhi Police, he was living in India since 2010 and was sentenced to death in 2013 in Bangladesh in a kidnapping-cum-murder case. "Reportedly, he is carrying a reward of one lakh taka on his arrest in Bangladesh. After getting bail from the court he entered in India illegally and was living in India since 2010. He is involved in many heinous cases in Bangladesh," the police said.

Ayodhya students booked on sedition charges

A group of students of the Saket College in Ayodhya have been booked under sedition charges after they allegedly raised 'azaadi' slogans during their protest against the delay in announcing the dates of the students' union elections. The police have registered a sedition case on the complaint of the college principal. However, the protesting students denied the allegation and said they were demanding 'azaadi' from the corrupt principal and anti-student system of the college. In his complaint, the principal of the college, N.D. Pandey, said that the students were raising anti-national slogans like 'le ke rahenge azaadi' (we shall not rest till we get freedom) on December 16.

Amid farmers' protests civic body polls begin in Haryana

Amid the farmers' protests against the contentious three farm laws, polling for municipal elections began on Sunday in the BJP-Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) ruled Haryana. This are the first elections in the state after the BJP-JJP alliance came to power in the state in October 2019. The BJP-JJP combine and the Congress are in the fray.  The polling will continue till 5.30 p.m. for the seats of the mayor and members of the wards of the municipal corporations of Ambala, Panchkula and Sonepat, and president and members of the municipal council of Rewari and the municipal committees of Sampla (Rohtak), Dharuhera (Rewari) and Uklana (Hisar).

Iran, Syria to launch joint bank to facilitate trade ties

Iran and Syria are planning to establish a joint bank to facilitate bilateral trade cooperation, a top official said here. "We are also trying to create an internal SWIFT (mechanism) between the Central Banks of Iran and Syria in order to counter the (western) sanctions," Xinhua news agency quoted Gol Mohammadi, a senior member of the economic development headquarters of Iran, Iraq and Syria, as saying on Saturday.

3 dead, 3 injured in shooting at Illinois bowling alley

A gunman opened fire inside an Illinois bowling alley, killing three people and injuring three others on Saturday night in what authorities believe was a random attack. A person of interest was taken into custody after the shooting at Don Carter Lanes, Rockford Police Chief Dan O'Shea said during a news conference. O'Shea did not immediately release additional information about the person of interest or the victims. He said he did not think any officers fired their weapons. Rockford is about 80 miles (130 kilometres) northwest of Chicago.

PM sold out fish in Brexit trade deal, fishermen say

British fishermen said on Saturday that Prime Minister Boris Johnson had sold out fish stocks to the European Union with a Brexit trade deal that gives EU boats significant access to the United Kingdom’s rich fishing waters. Some British politicians also said the deal added up to a sell-out. The United Kingdom will leave the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy on Dec. 31, but under the trade deal agreed on Christmas Eve the current rules will remain largely in place during a 5-1/2-year transition period.
