EC serves showcause notice to NPP, UDP in Meghalaya for model code violation
The Election Commission of India has issued showcause notice to National People's Party (NPP) and United Democratic Party (UDP) as their candidates in West Shillong constituency allegedly distributed pressure cookers and bowl sets to voters in violation of the model code of conduct, Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor said on Saturday.
Elections to the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly will be held on February 27 and the counting of votes will take place on March 2.
Rs 7,000 cr proposed budgetary allocation for eCourts project phase 3 to enhance judicial efficiency: CJI
The proposed allocation of Rs 7,000 crore in the 2023-24 budget for phase three of the eCourts Project will enhance judicial institutions and efficiency while ensuring courts reach every citizen, Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said Saturday.
Addressing the 73rd anniversary of the establishment of the Supreme Court, he said that during the COVID-19 pandemic period, the top court adopted video conferencing of court proceedings to reach out to the people.
"In the recent budget, the Government of India has introduced a provision of Rs 7,000 crore for phase-3 of the e-courts project. This will help enhance the accessibility of judicial institutions and the efficiency of judicial systems in India. Such endeavour will ensure the court reaches every citizen of India," Justice Chandrachud said.
WHO calls for strengthening health systems for prevention, early detection of cancer
On World Cancer Day, WHO called for intensified action across the South-East Asia Region to strengthen health systems in prevention and early detection of cancer.
It also stressed on providing prompt treatment referrals, enhancing access to palliative care and closing the gap in access to quality cancer care services.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, accounting for an estimated 9.9 million deaths in 2020, said Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, the WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia.
Avalanche hits J-K's Gulmarg, no reports of any loss
An avalanche hit the upper areas of the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district on Saturday, police said. No loss of life has been reported yet, they said. "The avalanche has occurred in Affarwat Gulmarg today morning. So far, no reports of any loss," a police official said.
The area has already been notified as a "Red Zone" and is restricted for any movement, he said. Tourists are advised not to venture into the area and cooperate with police, the official said.
Airfield security review meeting held in Jammu
Airfield security meeting was held on Saturday in J&K's Jammu city.
Defence Ministry spokesman, Lt Colonel Devender Anand said in a statement: "Jammu Airfield Security review meeting was held at Air Force Station Jammu with Village Heads of areas in immediate vicinity of Jammu Airfield along with representatives from concerned civil agencies to discuss important areas of concern related to airfield security and aerospace safety for safe aircraft operations at Jammu."
Amit Shah pays obeisance at Baba Baidyanath temple in Jharkhand's Deoghar
Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Jharkhand's Deoghar on Saturday and paid obeisance at the famed Baba Baidyanath temple.
He performed special prayers at the temple, which is one of the 12 jyotirlingas, a senior BJP leader said.
A team of priests assisted the Union home minister in performing the prayers amid tight security in the temple complex.

Gymnast Dipa Karmakar announces settlement of doping case over unknowingly taking banned substance
Gymnast Dipa Karmakar has announced the resolution of her dispute with the international federation over a provisional suspension for a positive test for ingestion of a banned substance in October 2021 and she will be back in action in July 2023.
Dipa had to take a provisional suspension when her sample from an out-of-competition test had returned positive for a banned substance which she "unknowingly ingested and could not determine the source of".
"I am happy that the matter has been amicably resolved. My suspension has been reduced by three months and back-dated by 25 months, allowing me to return to the sport I love in July 2023," Dipa informed in a tweet on Saturday.

The next e-auction for the sale of FCI wheat to bulk consumers like flour millers under the open market sale scheme (OMSS) will be held on February 15, the Food Ministry said on Saturday.
State-run Food Corporation of India (FCI) has been mandated to sell 25 lakh tonnes of wheat from its buffer stock to bulk consumers under the OMSS in order to contain rising prices of wheat and wheat products in the country.
