Taliban urges OIC members to push US to release Afghan assets

The Taliban government urged major Islamic nations to push the US to call off sanctions imposed on Afghanistan, saying the actions are exacerbating the refugee crisis and hurting its people. The freezing of Afghan assets by the US is in violation of human rights, while the suspension of development assistance by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank has affected health, education and social services, according to acting Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi. Bloomberg quoted him as saying at a special session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s Council of Foreign Ministers in Pakistan.

Dozens released after protest at Chennai plant of Apple supplier Foxconn

Police in Tamil Nadu have released dozens of those detained for blocking a key highway in a protest against food poisoning at a Foxconn unit, the country's second instance of unrest at an Apple Inc supplier factory in a year, Reuters reported. The highway was blocked for Chennai, home to a plant where the Taiwan contract manufacturer, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, began assembling the iPhone 12 this year. It was not immediately clear if production was disrupted by the protests sparked by last week's food poisoning incident that led to 150 employees being admitted to hospital.

Researchers in the UK are using new ways to rapidly develop and mass manufacture mRNA vaccines and therapeutics at low cost against COVID-19 and a range of other diseases.

 

The research project will boost the UK's and the world's ability to rapidly develop new vaccines in response to new variants of COVID-19 and also future pandemics.

 

In non-emergency times, the new production technology will give developers and manufacturers access to the state-of-the-art processes needed to produce new vaccines and treatments for other major diseases such as cancer, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular conditions and autoimmune diseases much faster, the University of Sheffield said in a statement on Sunday. Iran reports 1st Omicron case

Iran has reported its first case of the Covid-19 Omicron variant, a top health official announced here.

An Iranian national was tested positive with the disease after returning to the country, Xinhua news agency quoted Mohammad Mehdi Gooya, the head of management centre of infectious diseases of the Health Ministry, as saying on Sunday.

"Currently, only one case of this strain has been identified in Iran and two cases are suspected of this disease. The situation of these (two) people are being studied and the results will be made public as soon as the final test results are announced," he added.
