Eliminating lymphatic filariasis priority for India, multi-drug administration to be held twice: Mandaviya

Inaugurating the National Symposium on India's Roadmap to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya reiterated India's commitment towards the target of eradicating the disease from the country by end of 2027. 

As part of its commitment to eliminate the disease by end of 2027, the health ministry has come up with a renewed five-pronged strategy as part of which multi-drug administration (MDA) will be held twice a year in synchronisation with National Deworming Day on February 10 and August 10, Mandaviya said.

Satellite images show Joshimath sank by 5.4 cm in just 12 days: Isro report

Satellite images of Uttarakhand's Joshimath released by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) show that the Himalayan town sank at a rapid pace of 5.4 cm in just 12 days, triggered by a possible subsidence event on January 2.
 
Joshimath, the gateway to famous pilgrimage sites like Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib and international skiing destination Auli, is facing a major challenge due to land subsidence.
 
The preliminary study by ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) said the land subsidence was slow between April and November 2022, during which Joshimath had sunk by 8.9 cm

Parliament's Budget session to start from Jan 31, budget to be presented on Feb 1

The Budget Session of Parliament is likely to begin on January 31 and is expected to conclude on April 6 with a recess in between.
 
The session will commence with an address by President Droupadi Murmu to the joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in the Central Hall of Parliament. This will be the first address to the two Houses of Parliament by President Murmu since her elevation to the top post in August last year.

India logs 174 fresh Covid-19 cases in a day, active caseload down by 52

India's tally of COVID-19 cases rose by 174 in a day while the active caseload declined to 2,257, according to Union Health Ministry data updated on Friday.
 
The total number of Covid cases recorded in India so far was 4.46 while the death toll was 5,30,725 with two more fatalities -- one reconciled by Kerala and one reported by Maharashtra in a day, data updated at 8 am showed.
 
The daily positivity was recorded at 0.09 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was 0.10 per cent.

Insiders enabled capital riots, says Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he's convinced that supporters of his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro inside the presidential palace facilitated the entry of rioters into key state buildings in capital Brasilia on January 8.

"I am convinced that the door to the Planalto palace was opened so these people could get in because I didn't see the front door had been broken down. And that means that somebody facilitated their entry here," the BBC quoted the President as saying to reporters here on Thursday.

"Many people in the military police were complicit... There were many people in the armed forces here inside (the palace) who were complicit."

PM Modi to flag off MV Ganga Vilas luxury cruise in Varanasi today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the MV Ganga Vilas luxury cruise on the world's longest river voyage from Varanasi to Dibrugarh on Friday.

He will also lay the foundation and inaugurate several projects of inland waterways in Bihar, West Bengal and Assam on this occasion.

Divisional Commissioner Kaushal Raj Sharma said, "The Prime Minister will flag off the Ganga Vilas cruise through video-conferencing and also inaugurate tent city on the bank of the Ganga on Friday."

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that Varanasi is famous as the cultural and spiritual capital of the world and under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kashi has established itself on the global stage while maintaining its ancient soul.

A grand function will be organised at Ravidas Ghat where Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal along with other ministers and dignitaries will also be present.

Singer Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley, passes away at 54

Elvis Presley's only child Lisa Marie Presley, whose turbulent life also included a music career, passed away aged 54 on Thursday.
 
"Priscilla Presley and the Presley family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Lisa Marie," reads a family statement quoted in a report by Variety."They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."
 
According to Variety, a US-based news outlet, Presley was taken to the hospital early on Thursday morning after going into cardiac arrest at her Calabasas, California, home, only two days after she and her mother Priscilla Presley attended the Golden Globes. Paramedics gave her CPR, then they took her to the hospital.

Antonio Guterres urges member states to uphold UN values, rule of law

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on all member states to uphold the vision and the values of the UN Charter and the rule of law in particular.

"First and foremost, I urge all member states to uphold the vision and the values of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and to abide by international law," the UN chief on Thursday told a Security Council meeting on the promotion and strengthening of the rule of law in the maintenance of international peace and security, Xinhua news agency reported.

Noting that the rule of law is "foundational to the United Nations, and to our mission of peace," and that the cornerstone of the rule of law is that "all people, institutions, and entities, public and private, including the state itself, are accountable before the law," the top UN official said the rule of law protects the vulnerable, and prevents discrimination, harassment and other abuses.

Joshimath crisis: Demolition of houses, two hotels rendered unsafe begins

The demolition of houses and two hotels rendered unsafe due to land subsidence here has started on Thursday. The two hotels -- Hotel Malari Inn and Hotel Mount View, besides developing cracks, have also tilted backwards.

The demolition is being done under the supervision of the Central Building Research Institute by teams of National Disaster Response Force, Public Works Department and State Disaster Response Force.

According to sources, the demolition of the hotels began after discussion on compensation was held between the property owners and the district administration.

The Uttarakhand government has announced an amount of Rs 1.5 lakh per affected family.

Seriously concerned on increasing use of money power in polls: ECI to SC

Contending that the ECI is seriously concerned about the increasing use of money power in elections, the poll panel has told the Supreme Court that it has introduced a robust mechanism for election expenditure monitoring during polls.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) said one of the reasons for more money being seized today is its increased vigilance and efforts.

It said that the services of central and state law enforcement agencies are routinely engaged, and their teams deployed to poll-bound states to monitor election expenditure.

Isro's preliminary report, satellite images shows entire Joshimath may sink

The National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has released satellite images of Joshimath and a preliminary report on land subsidence which shows that the entire town may sink.

The pictures are taken from the Cartosat-2S satellite.

Hyderabad-based NRSC has released the satellite images of areas that are sinking.

In images, the entire town, including the Army's helipad and the Narasimha temple, has been marked as sensitive zone.

On the basis of Isro's preliminary report, Uttarakhand government is conducting rescue operation in danger-prone areas and the people in these areas are being shifted to safer places on priority.
