33rd anniversary of Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989: Student activists organize protest

Students for Free Tibet (SFT) has organized a 'photo action' protest to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989 in China.

The action of SFT activists which was performed at Mainsquare, Mcleod Ganj in Dharamshala, is a recreation of the act of defiance by Tankman after the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Tenzin Pasang, programme coordinator of SFT said: Today is the 33rd anniversary of the massacre that happened in 1989 in Beijing. So we are here doing a solidarity action for them. We are just marking that day and remembering the day when China massacred all the protestors who were asking for freedom of speech and press freedom."

Amid Imran Khan's assassination rumours, security agencies on high alert in Islamabad

Amid rumours of a plot being hatched to assassinate former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, the Islamabad police department said on Saturday night that the security agencies have been put on high alert in adjoining areas of Bani Gala in the city.

Section 144 has already been imposed in Islamabad and gatherings have been banned, the Islamabad police spokesperson said on Saturday.

 A fire broke out at a textile mill in the Pandesara area of Surat last night. 

 

Fire officer Falgun Kumar said, "15-20 firefighters reached the spot. No casualties have been reported yet."

BSF recovers IED in Odisha's Malkangiri

An Improvised explosive device was recovered in the foothills of Bejangiwada village of the Malkangiri district on Saturday.

Four bags of Gelatin sticks were also recovered from a rocky crevice near village Tekguda and Dulagandi, under police station Kalimela of Malkangiri.

"Based on a specific input, On June 4, an operation was launched in Bejangiwada RF, general area of Bodigetta and MPV -21, in AP-OD border. The Joint Operation Party of Border Security Force and District Police Malkangiri, while searching the area in the foothills of the Bejangiwada RF, recovered one unarmed Tiffin IED and 4 bags of Gelatin sticks (Total no of Gelatin=736, Weight=89 Kg) from a rocky crevice near village Tekguda and Dulagandi, under PS Kalimela of Malkangiri," said a statement released by the BSF.

Delhi sees heatwave conditions, maximum temperature at 47.1 degrees

Delhi witnessed scorching summer heat on Saturday with the temperature in parts of the city going beyond 47 degree Celsius.

The maximum temperature was 47.1 degrees at Mungeshpur and Pitampura recorded 46.5 degree Celsius. The weather station at Najafgarh recorded a maximum temperature of 46.2 degree Celsius.

PM Modi to launch global initiative 'LiFE Movement' today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch a global initiative 'Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) Movement' on Sunday at 6 pm via video conferencing.

As per the PMO, the launch will initiate the "LiFE Global Call for Papers" inviting ideas and suggestions from academics, universities and research institutions etc to influence and persuade individuals, communities and organisations across the world to adopt an environment-conscious lifestyle.

The programme will also witness the participation of Bill Gates, Co-Chairman of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Lord Nicholas Stern, Climate Economist; Professor Cass Sunstein, author of Nudge Theory; Aniruddha Dasgupta, CEO and President of the World Resources Institute; Inger Andersen, UNEP Global Head; Achim Steiner, UNDP Global Head and David Malpass, World Bank President, among others.
